Search engines build their index of websites by ‘reading’ your website regularly to pick up keywords and information on what your website is about. Google being Google doesn’t abide by industry standards where website owners can have a special file on their website especially to tell search engines how often they should check the website and instead force website owners to create a special Google account where they have to select settings how much or how little Google should check your site for updates.

So tonight the ADVNZ website went down for a bit, I’m, not sure for how long, maybe 2 hours. It turns out this was because the website had used all of the CPU processing time that’s included in our web hosting package. Some further investigation reveals this had happened because Google had reset all our settings in the Google tool and was checking the ADVNZ website for updates 100,000 times per day!.

Thankfully the hosting company put the site back up and assisted me in finding out what was happening and how to fix it so we are back online again.

We had a few issues again tonight, there was also another bot slamming the site which took it down again. That has now been dealt with and the hosting provider also gave a couple of tips on how to harden the site a little bit more resilient which will hopefully help.
