This is an email from the friends of the 42nd traverse group:
It’s taken a while to get DoC agreement to allow 4×4’s onto the 42 Traverse before Dec 1, but they’ve now given permission for access over the weekend of 11/12 November.
The plan is to try to get a really good number of people to tackle the vegetation along the stretch of track from the ‘Lookout’ down to the Waione Stream. We would start from the pumice pit on Kapoors Rd.
I’m suggesting that a start time on the Saturday might be 9.30am to allow people to drive from surrounding regions if they wish. I’ll be staying overnight on the Sat, possibly in National Park, with the aim of doing a few more hours on Sunday before heading away in the early afternoon. Any assistance is welcomed.
DoC will do a health and safety briefing on the Saturday morning and a check on the competency of the operators of chainsaws. Personal protection gear would be advisable to have, to comply with DoC H&S
Past projects have shown that teams made up of a chainsaw, a brushcutter and people clearing the cut material can be effective. Petrol hedgecutters are useful on Toi Toi etc. Put together a team and come and give a hand.
If you’re able to assist, please email [email protected]
this mainly directed to the 4×4 community but I think we could also help. I’m a long way away up in Auckland but hopefully some of the members closer could go and help if available.
