IF you were looking for a brand to use as the basis for a modern, retro-inspired bike, Husqvarna – with its unbreakable links to Steve McQueen and all the overwrought ‘cool’ that accompanies it – might be the very best one to opt for.

And that’s just what the firm has done with two new concept bikes, the 401 VITPILEN and 401 SVARTPILEN.

In case it’s not immediately obvious, the frame and engine come straight from KTM’s Duke 390, and that means this concept is far from a wild fantasy; it’s a reskinned version of an existing, street-legal, emissions-friendly production bike. While Husqvarna hasn’t mentioned many details, the bike is likely to use the same capacity as the KTM – that’s 373cc – with 43bhp. The KTM’s 193kg weight would also be a good guide to the VITPILEN’s potential mass.

Next up, there’s the 401 SVARTPILEN (Black Arrow) which is inspired by old scramblers. The styling is sure to be divisive, but there’s no doubting it’s instantly recognisable. Again, the basis is the KTM Duke 390, but this time there are big, knobbly tyres instead of semi-slicks.

Both bikes would need changes to be viable for production – the headlights, for instance, are very ‘concept’ and there’s a distinct lack of indicators, mirrors or licence plate hangers – but given the way the firm’s has taken the 701 from concept to production version in 12 months, it would be no surprise to see proddy versions of the two 401 machines this time next year.

Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 and 125 on sale by spring 2017

HUSQVARNA’S Vitpilen 401 will go on sale in spring 2017 alongside a 125cc variant of the roadster, the firm has confirmed on its website.

The Vitpilen 401, shown above, uses the frame and engine from parent company KTM’s Duke and RC 390, so the 125 version is certain to use the steel trellis chassis and 124.7cc single shared by the Duke and RC 125.

The Vitpilen 125 isn’t a complete surprise, since it was spotted undergoing road tests in June alongside a disguised 401. Visordown revealed the 401 was headed for production back in January.

It was first shown as a concept last year alongside a knobbly tyred version called the Svartpilen 401. Vitpilen translates from Swedish as ‘white arrow’ while Svartpilen is ‘black arrow’. The range is inspired by the 1950s Husqvarna Silverpilen. That’s right, ‘silver arrow’.

Husky confirmed the 125 variant after revealing the Vitpilen 701 concept at last week’s Eicma motorcycle show in Milan. The 701, which is also almost certainly production bound, uses the 690cc single from KTM’s 690 Enduro R and SMC R, which is also shared by the Husqvarna 701 Supermoto and Enduro.

Husqvarna said: ‘Recognised and globally awarded for its unique design the Husqvarna VITPILEN 401 is set to hit the showrooms soon. The bike that draws on the iconic Husqvarna Silverpilen street bike of the early ‘50s combining it with modern technology and premium quality hardware will be available for sale in the spring of 2017.

‘An exciting new addition to the VITPILEN family, which will be produced to hit the dealer floors simultaneously with the 401, is the brand new VITPILEN 125. Minimalistic in layout the VITPILEN 125 is also powered by a single-cylinder engine, staying true to all the unique design characteristics of its bigger brother.’

HUSQVARNA has used the Eicma show in Milan to reveal that its minimalistic Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401 will be in dealers by late autumn next year.

Power comes from a 375cc single-cylinder DOHC engine that makes 44hp and 27.3lb/ft torque. Husqvarna says it delivers useful acceleration at all speeds plus good manners and fuel economy. It’s equipped with a slipper clutch and the engine is housed in a steel trellis frame.

Brakes come courtesy of Bybre – with a single four-piston caliper and 320mm disc at the front and a single-piston caliper and 230mm disc at the rear. Bump management will be handled by WP suspension.

Husqvarna also used the Eicma show to reveal that the larger capacity Vitpilen 701 is still the ‘next visionary step’ in its return to the street and is still a concept.
