A man who advertised motorbikes for sale on Facebook as a means of luring people to remote areas where he robbed them at gunpoint has been jailed for more than eight years for his “gangster-like behaviour”.

Moanaroa Kidwell, 28, appeared for sentence in the Hamilton District Court on Monday, after earlier pleading guilty to a raft of charges including assault with intent to rob, committing a dangerous act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, aggravated robbery and using a computer to commit a crime.

Kidwell’s main charges stemmed from a series of incidents in March last year, in which Kidwell led a group of co-offenders in two bandit-style hold-ups.

These incidents began on March 2, which involved a buyer transferring $1000 into an account before picking up a bike that had been advertised on Facebook. The buyer later drove to the given Hamilton address but no one there knew anything about the sale.

Then on March 8 Kidwell advertised another bike for sale under an alias. In this situation the victim was told to go to a rural address in Gordonton. After being directed up a driveway by one of Kidwell’s associates, the victim was surprised by Kidwell, who charged toward him with a shotgun.

The victim had to hand over about $2000 in cash from his wallet, and was forced to lie on the ground and plead for his life as Kidwell and his associate discussed whether or not they would shoot him.

Another incident happened on March 16 and involved a man being lured to a similar rural property in Kihikihi, with Kidwell using a sawn-off shotgun to menace that victim.

On that occasion Kidwell emerged from the bushes and opened fire on the would-be bike buyer. The bullet grazed the man’s head and burst his eardrum. He tried to get away, but in doing so crashed his car into a tree, and was force to run for his life on foot.
