Yes, Hamilton Road is very short but it is so cool it really deserves mention – like any road that only sees the occasional 4WD or adventure bike!

Here is how I found it after coming west along SH30 from Te Teko and the turning right in to Matahi Road.

Matahi Road is a lovely winding sealed road that after 5km brings you to Rendall Road on your left – and now you are on gravel. See first picture.

After 4km you turn left in to Manawahe Road and it’s along here you will see a sign saying “Reserve” and a little road on your left which leads you to a 4WD or adventure bike only track (see picture) down to a remote white sandy beach on Lake Rotoma.
This is a great spot to peel off the riding gear on a hot day and have a refreshing dip (I highly recommend it)!

Back om the bike and after heading up the track back on to Manawahe Road keeping heading west until you reach the intersection with Hamilton Road on your right.

Hamilton Road start off as a normal off the beaten track gravel road but then becomes a narrow dirt road with blackberry on either side before entering the forest. See pictures.

It’s here that you might start to think you are lost but if you keep riding west you’ll pop out on Pongakawa Valley Road (gravel) which 5km later will lead to Roetuhu Road where you should turn left and head south west – if you are heading towards the top of Lake Rotorua.

I think I need to do a day trip over Rotorua way soon to do this and Porters Road and other random tracks over that way.

Thought it was about time to ditch the trailwings on the DR. I fitted a set of 804 & 805’s and so a ride was required…
Had a great few hours heading south down Rotoehu Rd, then left onto Pongakawa Valley Rd, then onto Hamilton Rd and left onto Manawahe rd to check out the 4wd track going down to the beach on lake Rotoma, though that got steep, rutted and slippery so chickened out being on my own and a newbie…
Return trip saw me heading west along Rotoehu Rd then right onto Maniatutu Rd. A good mix of gravel, twisty sealed and scenic.
Cheers for the above post Re – Hamilton Rd
