Junction Road is 15km of gravel connecting Tarata Road and The Forgotten Highway (SH43). Starting just after the Ngatoto Road intersection near Purang

Another good road is Mangaoapa Rd, coming from Inglewood on Junction Rd turn right onto Mangaoapa Rd. This is all gravel, and is arguably more scenic and definitely less used than Junction Rd. Comes out on Mohakau Rd and can also get you onto the Forgotten Highway.

Rode this 12/1/21 from SH43 through to Tarata road and eventually to SH3.
Very scenic with windy saddles to cross. Appears to be suffering from heavy truck traffic. Surface was mostly sandy, varying from loose to hard packed into double wheel ruts (pic), making it rather hard work for someone of limited skills (i.e, like me) particularly in the hairpins. Surface improved markedly between Mangaoapa Road and Tarata Road. Tarata Road is mainly tarseal but this and Otaraoa Raod are a really nice ride out to the coast.
