That doesn’t sound like a lot of fun…

Will wait till the very end of summer, and take a rope or two.

    Thanks

Consider a winch and a shovel as well 🙂

Even the 4×4 boys going up there these days only do the Matamata side due to the poor state of the track

I have talked to couple of guys yesterday who took their 4×4 trucks on Saturday. They came back minus 1, which finally got winched out yesterday morning by an excavator that they “borrowed” from the local farmer.

The 4×4 offroaders club advice to their members is to stay out of Thomson’s until summer. And even then make sure you take suitable recovery gear. I would probably recommend the same for the 2 wheel brigade.

Edit the file down to less than 500kb and try it again, or email it to me at the email address at the bottom of the page and I can do it.

The file size limit is in place as pictures take up a huge amount of hosting space. 1 500kb image is equivalent to over a hundred forum posts in hosting space.

I’ve done thompsons track on my mountain bike from tauranga side to top at least 3 times and 2 times all the way down to the te aroha side prior to 2014. its doable but in some places on tauranga side you have to carry your mtn bike. We once attempted it with 3 guys on honda postie bikes from tauranga side but 2 of us gave up half way in through sheer physical exhaustion of hauling bikes thru the mud. the other guy was a trails bike rider and he went ahead and might have been able to make it but he was always coming back and helping us. its very hard!!!

Has anyone been up in the last 12months? From Aerial photography it looks as though some work has been done to the eastern side on the track. I know the 4×4 guys were talking about trying to open it up the whole way once again. Can anyone confirm the current condition of the eastern side…
If not I look myself in cumming weeks or months. Any takers to come exploring with me…

It sounds like @claasen needs to get his WR or something out and you guys put together a small crew to give it a crack.

Nathan Calcinai posted this pic on the Adventure Riding NZ Facebook group recently, this is one of the first few bogs on the te Aroha side. You can compare to the original pics on this page what the bog was like a few years ago and what 4×4’s have done to it now.

Once passed this it like @simon_jackson pics above.

Given the lack of rain of late I did a detour on my way north to check out the track. Some of the holes have bypasses, some don’t but thouse that didn’t weren’t that deep and being firm not glugy, so as long as momentum was kept up I was sweet. I didn’t even look at track heading to Katikati as was by myself, although I would be keen for a look with some company after a good dry season. I Would also note not to attempt without a skid/bash plate either and mine came into contact with the boulders that line the road several times.

The week before last (2-3 Jan 2020), we ventured out of Auckland for a little motorcycle getaway

Heading south to the furthest track on the list then working our way north to others (Old Wire, , Thompson’s was the first order of the day (approaching from the Te Aroha side)

With the preceding dry weather it was a good day for it. It was our first time attempting the track and all we had to go by was this thread and a few Youtube videos (most of which warned about the Katikati side).

It was some awesome riding, no issues with the mud puddles, and we found ourselves at the summit in about 1hr10min (incl stops). Descending was a lot of fun, and having previewed the track on the way up (and keeping our line selection in mind) we were down the mountain in about 35min.

The drier conditions made for loads of fun, nice and easy riding, even on loaded bikes (me: Husky FE450, my buddy: Suzi DR650). But I can see how in the wetter months this could become pretty challenging.

First trip up Thompsons from the east, didn’t get all the way through, prob got half-way up and called it quits at a rather deep bog…

I rode most of the track last week from the Te Aroha side we got within 1 km of the end before being defeated by a deep mud filled hole that the 4 wheel drives have created. I was riding my 350 EXC, I wouldn’t want to have done it on a big bike. The ride to the top is alot easier than the drop down to Katikati
