Two cars were swept away by rising water as they attempted to cross a ford south of Blenheim on Christmas Day.

A police spokeswoman said the cars were driving along Taylor Pass Road, between Maxwell Pass Road and Awatere Valley Road, when they attempted to cross the ford at about 7pm.

One of the cars was swept into nearby trees, while the other was swept downstream.
