Hi team,
I need suggestions on tracks that can be done comfortably alone whilst touring south island, I’m a intermediate rider and have previously toured the south Island in 2019.
In the South Canterbury area I would recommend the following. They are all gravel roads and not demanding:
1): The Rangitata Valley: Either on the east or west side of the valley is a good ride. On the west side the road goes from Peel Forest to Mesopotamia, with the option of continuing onward along a 4×4 track at Mesopotamia further up the valley. The east side the track runs from Hakatere to the Erewhon sheep station. While at Hakatere you can take the road up to Heron Lake.
2): From Waihao (south of Waimate) head over Meyers Pass Road into the Hakataramea Valley. They over Hakataramea Pass and drop down into the MacKenzie Basin. Then its a short ride over the Mackenzie Pass into Fairlie for a pie at the Fairlie Bakehouse.
