Aotuhia Station is private farm land with a paper road marked through the station, the paper road as marked is impassible in places and at those points the track travels over the private farm land. Due to this permission is required to access Aotuhia Station and can be obtained by calling the station and speaking to the land owner on 06-7625545. The land owner is motorcycle friendly.
Aotuhia Station starts at the Bridge to Somewhere at the end of the Old Whangamomona Road and loops back around to SH43 – The Forgotten Highway so the 3 combined make a great loop.
The track itself is farm track ranging from fairly well groomed but lumpy track at the Aotuhia Station end through to steep, overgrown, rutted track with some big elevation changes towards the Kohuratahi Road End.
Aotuhia Station has Shearers Quarters on site that sleep up to 18 and accomodation may be able to be arranged also.

I’ve had an email from Aotuhai station stating the Station is now closed to visitors due to Health and Safety Regulations. I’ve forwarded them the information we have about access.
To which I sent the following reply.
Is there any news on this?
I don’t know if you are aware but I work for a training organisation and we are presently going through the transition from the HSE Act 1992 to the new HSW Act 2015. 15000 HSR Reps will require the training, both on-line and a face to face session.
This stumbling block is exactly what I teach and the lack or understanding is disconcerting to say the least…
Bad press, scaremongering and rumours has quashed this sort of example above!
Can you enlighten me as to whether this is a no go or a yes?
Of course there is a primary duty of care to the duty holder, but at the end of the day if something happens and that person is doing something the stakeholder stated expressly not to do, then he or she is fine….
The idiot that rode somewhere they shouldn’t has to explain that to St John. Worksafe wouldn’t be interested…
One thing, you are there with the permission of the farmer, 2, he hasn’t employed you and besides the fact it being a place of work, his obligations under the Act is only to really warn you of the places you shouldn’t go due the hazards of farming operations….
The rider should be aware of the hazards that farms inherently have, bumps, erosion, fences and stock! etc.
Let me know Eddie….
We can ride on Defence land and ride around explosive shells, artillery and only require a briefing to NOT pick any ammo that happens to be there, keep left and watch out for APC vehicles and the like and that is all….
You can see where the paranoia comes from? A Lack of understanding simply because in 1994 a Beekeeper fell through a bridge south of Taumarunui…
A huge disappointment…..
We will be going through Aotuhia Station as part of our upcoming Taumaranui Ride following the formed track that follows the paper road as much as geography allows but we will not be free range riding on the land.
I think part of the issue here was that the farm had been open to users coming onto the land and riding free range, but recently they had been riding recklessly causing issues and making a mess.
Hi Guys
Thinking of heading through AOTUHIA STATION from bridge to somewhere on Saturday. Apparently you have to get permission for the bit that links it all up.
Anyone been through lately,or rung for permission?
Cheers Andrew
Merged topic into existing Aotuhia Station discussion.
Might be late for you but I’ll ring and see if we can get through this weekend after Waitangi Day
‘@Jan Šircelj Please let us know how you got on with getting permission to ride through the station.
So got the farmer on the above 06 phone number today and been given permission to ride through over the coming weekend. He did have some concerns about dirt bikers being crazy lately but after assuring we’ll stay calm and keep on track etc on big 990/1190 adventure bikes he was quite good so thumbs up!
‘@Jan Šircelj That is great news. Have a fantastic ride through the station and don’t forget to tell us all how it went.
Did this on the 1st Feb 24 as part of a tour down to The Burt. Went in from the Tahora end and it’s dead easy till you get to the non maintained section of the Pukitikituna Road. It would be real challenge if there had been a lot of rain – loads of axel deep + ruts, rocks, slips and mud.
When you get past Canoe flat its all easy gravel. Awesome road, good adventure, would be better to ride with a buddy or group.
Went out on the Old Whangamomona Rd, way easier after a dry spell than a couple of years ago – did it again on Feb 22nd entering from the Upper Manhaehu RD back and the Old WHanga road had noticeably deteriorated, combination of 4wd and weather.
John, did you phone ahead to get permission, or did you hoon on through?
