56km along the Taihape Road from Napier you turn off right onto Castle Rock Road. 4 km along Castle Rock Road turn left into Lakes Road. A walking track leads to The Lakes 30 minutes each way.

The Lakes were first populated with Brown Trout sourced from Loch Leven in Scotland back in the early 1900’s, dropped in by plane. As you descend towards the lakes you catch glimpses of both Lakes through the trees. A great place to stop, eat your lunch and watch the world go by.

Was going to check this out on my way past but came across this sign at the entrance way. A rahui has been placed on Castle Rock and “the area is closed to public access until further notice.” I’m not sure if that includes the easement or if such easement exists anymore.

I found some info on It.

Ngati Huarere have implemented a r?hui (a restriction on entry) on their maunga, Motutere/Castle Rock (pictured), until further notice.

Two people, Shannon Earle Makowharemahihi and Kimi Worrell, have both unfortunately lost their lives in the last three months while exploring Motuture. Kuaotunu Land Search and Rescue was involved in the extraction of both Shannon and Kimi’s bodies and Steve Hart, KSAR chairman, says Motutere has been a focal point for their searches in recent times. “In the last few years we have been called out to Motutere for four search and rescue operations,” he says.

The closure of Motutere is effective immediately and the public are asked not to access the Motutere area.

“As legal owners, we want to take time to discuss how we manage our maunga going forward,” says Wanda Brljevich, Ngati Huarere spokesperson.

“This mountain is private property and notice is given that any unauthorised access will be considered as trespassing. Ngati Huarere does not accept any responsibility for anyone accessing the [area],” says Mrs Brljevich.
