A short distance West of Hastings, Gwavas Road is a sidetrip off SH50 that can be looped together with Salisbury Road or Kereru Road. The top half of Gwavas Road is wide sweeping gravel road following ridgelines through the Gwavas Forest, the bottom half is sedate seal through flat farmland.
Watch out for logging trucks and related traffic in both directions during weekdays.
This road is well maintained because of the logging operations. The wide road surface, fast corners, with plenty of runoff in the form of firebreak makes this a great road for power-sliding.

Are there locked gates in Gwavas Forest ? Thinking i would go to Ellis Hut for an overnighter if no gates. I have mtb it from Wakarara Rd end.
Yes there are locked gates on all roads into Gwavas. Need to talk to Pan Pac about getting a key for access.
