The Mataikona – Pack Spur Loop is a 40km diversion off the North side off the Castlepoint road between Tinui and Castlepoint and offers a mix of gently winding hill road, dirt track and smooth coastal roads with views out to sea.
In summer the road is well maintained however the Pack Spur section (Waypointed in GPX file) can be quite rutted and bumpy, and it has one relatively steep section. In winter or after a lot of rain the Pack Spur track section can become impassable as the clay base turns to mush. There are gates at either end of the Pack Spur track section which should be left as found, usually closed, and as you approach the West end of the Pack Spur track keep an eye out for aircraft as the road is right beside a landing strip. Not far in from the West end of the Pack Spur section is a cool little natural bowl beside the track that can be fun for a play.
This ride can be put together with Castlepoint Beach, the Alfredton-Tinui road, Homewood Road, Riversdale Beach or others to make an awesome ride.
