Mccallums Mill Road is a public gravel road that starts 10km north of Karamea and twists it’s way through the forest of Kahurangi National Park to the Oparara Basin.
The road surface is mostly very good with a few torn up and corrugated corners, the main thing to watch out for are adventurous tourists in campervans. About 14 km down the road is a signposted stopping point with a 10-minute walk down the river to the very impressive Oparara Arch. Also worth checking out are the limestone caves a 2-minute walk from the end of the road, the Box Canyon Cave is particularly worth seeing with a grand cavern and several hidden twisty passageways.
