This one needs checking out by the ‘Naki hardcore.

Meremere Track is only open during summer months, during winter the gate at the beginning of the track is locked.

500 metres South of Mokoia on SH3 take Whakamara Road inland and Meremere Road is 300 metres on the left. Follow Meremere Road for ~14.5km over mostly flat farmland until the seal ends at the gate, past which you can see Meremere Track heading into the Taranaki hills. From what we know Meremere Track is another 13km, and you come back out again the same way.

Hunting, cycling, walking and 4wd’ing are all popular in this area so caution should be taken and consideration should be given to other track users.

I reconnoitred the Meremere Track today and it’s quite soggy up there but not as bad as I thought it would be. The gate is locked and will remain so until 1st November. The dirt track is composed of papa clay which is rutted in places from vehicle use, plus there are a few small slips but nothing major.

At 5km from the start of the track (locked gate) the Mangaone trig marks the highest point on Meremere Track at 429m. The views from this point are quite fantastic. Looking out to the north you can see the Tangahoe Valley Road snaking its way across the ridge line where it finally ends at Lake Rotorangi (Patea River).
