This track starts from SHW 6 north of the Wairau River Bridge. It follows Northbank Road which is tarseal for about 30km, turns right onto the gravel Top Valley road then winds its way up through pine forest passing Lake Chalice carpark.
The surface is a good 4wd track but nearer the top is a bit rocky with big drops off the side in places and ends at a turnaround about 1500m altitude.
Its a good ride with great views. To get to the very top of Mt Patriarch there is a walking track from the turnaround.
Track type: Gravel Track composition: Loose, Steep, Undulating Slippery when wet?: No Suitable for bikes <650cc? Intermediate Suitable for bikes >650cc? Experienced River crossings? No
On the first weekend in November there was a gate at the beginning, which could be opened. Since apparently it is a paper road I do not see a reason for not taking it. One rutty 30-40m long section on a flat coming up after about 5k’s, where you will do a u-turn to follow the road. There was no washout then.
And yes, same way in and out. About 30-35km one way to summit from turnoff on Northbank Road.
Most of it rather easy, also on bigger adventure bikes. Higher up becoming intermediate. Just last k you will find some bigger rocks, experienced on 650cc+.
Be prepared for weather changes. 20 degrees in Blenheim, hail near the top.
Is this a one-way track? So same way out as in?
Tried going in here on Nov 11th unfortunately track is closed until further notice due to a huge washout at the start.
Thanks
