Ocean Beach Road lies on the southern cost of the Wairarapa. The ride is about 10km long and starts as a well formed sand track that gently winds it’s way along the beach past a number of weathered bach built in the traditional kiwi style that is rarely seen now. Where the bach end is a DOC campsite named Corner Creek which provides the most basic facilities.
Once past the DOC campsite the trail climbs along the edge of the hill and starts to get steep and in places soft. Caution is required from here on as there is a significant drop off the side of the track.
At the first soft sandy section there is a gate which should be left closed. Once past the first gate the track varies from hard pack to short stretches of soft sand and from flat to very steep. Again caution is required due to the significant drop off the side of the track in places. The end of the accessible track is at the next gate which is locked by a padlock. It’s worth having a look upstream of the creek that comes out here as there’s a few cool little tracks and at the inland most point of the tracks a picnic table is nestled under the trees on the opposite side of the stream.
Around the bach area specifically there can be a lot of other beach users, including young children on bikes, be aware of those around you.

A group of local guys meet up and attempted to ride Ocean Beach but there’s been a large slip recently and currently the track is pretty much impassable.
You can check out the ride report here: https://www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/forums/topic/wgtn-rideout/page/6/#post-18651
@Chris took some drone footage of the slip

The track through this slip has been repaired.
that is correct, I have been there yesterday, running and the road was in pretty good condition, with bits of super soft sand here and there, what freaks me out on my gs1200 but yeah, looked great, would love to do an expedition soon! 😉
Ocean Beach was my favorite ride in the Wellington region.
@Box.a.Bits looks like you’ll be able to test your reborn machine when it’s ready.
