Ohinewai Road runs from just North of Patetonga on SH26 through to the backblocks of Waitetuna or vice versa. It’s a very scenic road with views out over steeply rolling hills. It is single lane with quite a few tight corners and a good surface.
Just South of Ohinewai Road are Waiti Road and Old Hill Road, all 3 tracks combined make a great loop.
While in the area it’s worth using Top Road to join Ohinewai rd to Waiti rd both great gravel roads. A small section of top road is sealed but windy the remander is gravel.
Also close by is Quinn road which is sealed, but windy fun with great views.
Dose anyone know if Magapiko Vally Rd joins to Hoult Rd and can be used to link up with Matahuru/ Ohinewai Rd? On paper it dose and on Google maps has anyone actually road it?
I checked out the Waikaka/Mangawara loop by the Patetonga speedway but they actually go into private forest so you can’t complete the loop, Hoult might be part of the same forest area.
I got an impromptu ride in today so headed through here again, it was a good day for it.

Had a little ride around on these roads today. from Hamilton to Orini Road, then eventually to Storey Road. turning right off Storey Road, Ohinewai road was nice, going from south to north. Hoult Road only goes up a couple km’s to a cattle truck turning circle and gates marked no entry without permission, so indeed it’s “No Exit” as the additional sign on the road sign suggests. Coming out the North End of Ohinewai road and turning South on SH27 for 3 or 4km kilometres it’s easy to use Top Road, on the right, to link up to Waiti road to make a little loop starting and finishing in Te Hoe.
Can also use Pioneer Road if leaving from Tahuna heading North toward SH27 to get onto Old Hill Road, on your left, and then to Top Road to do the loop in anti-clockwise direction.
I went down the western end of Mangapiko Valley Road, but it only went half a K then joined Waiterimu road which I turned North on. I didn’t go down the Eastern end of Mangapiko Valley Road. I should have! on my paper road atlas it shows it as a dead end. but on google maps there is a single line that carries on and does link up to the end of Hoult road. Perhaps there is a paper road through there that can be accessed with the land owners permission?? Does anyone know how to look into this to find out who to contact to get access?
I went over Ohinewai Road today and it’s in good condition. A couple of corners on the West side of the summit had fresh gravel on them but otherwise it was all hard packed.
Some photos from last summer.
Another couple.
There is a side rode off the Ohiniwahi – Matahuru Rd called Hoult Rd which is worth a look. Also Mangapiko Rd near by.
I rode this again today in the daylight so have added some more pics.

Not sure about those ones.
