Old Kaimai Road lies at the top of the Kaimai Ranges on SH29 and offers a short respite from the state highway. Caution needs to be taken entering Old Kaimai Road from the East as SH29 is a very busy road.
While Old Kaimai Road is only just over 6km long it offers great views back to SH29 and beyond to the ocean. About half of the road is gravel and half seal but all of it is tight and twisty. Due to a clay base the gravel section could be quite slippery if wet.
At the West end of Old Kaimai Road is a play area used local 4wd’s which might offer a bit of fun.
