Pongakawa Bush Rd runs though farming country and turns to seal for the last bit but again is fun due to its twisty nature.

At the North end there’s 9km of seal then the road turns to gravel a it drops steeply downhill with some tight corners. Once through that the road follows a valley floor between hills.

From its junction with Pugh Rd it carries on to a dead end that is not logged so Pugh Road is the entrance/Exit at the southern end. Pirini Trail Bike Park is accessible off Pongakawa Bush Rd, some of the Pirini Trail Park track can be seen in the first pic.

Pongakawa Bush Road runs along the valley floor between a range of small hills as as such took a bit of water damage from the storms in early 2023.

As of mid February the road has been graded but is still quite pot-holed, and there’s some decent sized stones on the surface. Also there’s quite a drop off at the road edge if you have to pull over for another vehicle.

The southern end of Pongakawa Bush Road is a dead end so you have to take the short Pugh Road to get to/from Maniatutu Road.
