Port Jackson Road runs up the West side of the Coromandel Peninsula from the T-junction at the northern end of Colville Road to the northern most tip of the peninsula. The road offers stunning views across the Hauraki Gulf and as you approach Fletcher Bay Great Barrier Island is clearly visible. At Fletcher Bay the road ends at a small beach and pleasant DOC campsite which is manned during the summer months and very popular, there are also several other campgrounds along the road on the way.

Port Jackson Road is a well maintained gravel road but is a single lane road that caters for 2-way traffic with many crests and blind corners. During winter the road is relatively quiet but during the summer months, especially mid December to mid January, it is highly trafficked with campervans, trucks and vehicles towing boats. Caution is advised at all times but during the Christmas holiday season it is recommended that beginner riders avoid this road.

Did this over the Easter weekend 2019, on my 2018 ural cT, and what a blast! Was dry on the way up and wet on the way down. Good road and very easy with spectacular views. Lots of fun and highly recommended.

A group of us completed the loop right across the top about 20 years ago. I contacted both the farmers at Fletchers Bay and Stoney Bay and both gave us permission. Then I contacted DOC re the bit in between and they said, bicycles OK, Motorcycles no way Jose. So we just went and did it anyway and nobody was the wiser and no conservation was undone. Easy route.

I did this Easter weekend 2022. rode in Easter Sunday, dry and dusty. Rained overnight. Road was mostly okay, but patches of mud to be aware of. West side of the road over the pass to Port Jackson is narrow, with not much edge protection. Avoid the campervans.
I want to do it again with really nice weather, to get better views, and maybe a swim.
