Port Waikato dunes are accessed directly from the North Waikato village of Port Waikato.
Access to the dunes is restricted to formed tracks, free range riding is not tolerated on the Port Waikato dunes. This is due to dune grass regeneration projects, bird nesting areas, trail bikes being ridden dangerously and causing a nuisance, and several riders having been killed here in recent years.
As you approach the dunes there are signs advising that any riders caught where they shouldn’t be or riding irresponsibly will be reported to the police who fully support the restrictions. Explore responsibly and you won’t have a problem however.
The formed tracks still twist and turn around the area and there is enough to amuse all riders looking for a sand riding experience with tight corners, soft sand and steep climbs and descents. Due to the very soft sand I wouldn’t recommend anything heavier than a 650 single here unless your name is Chris Birch.
The track we recorded is the most direct route to the end of the point, however at several spots you enter clearings where 4 or 5 other tracks head off in all directions so there are many tracks to explore

Be wary of locals riding horses on the trails, especially the tighter tracks ( I find it pays to switch off and let them pass to help build good relations) and fishermen in 4x4s are another hazard while riding in here.
Another access is from the sunset beach ramp which takes you along the beach to the point.
