Puketoi Road links Pori Road to Haunui Road and then Route 52. From the Pori Road end the track starts off as good gravel but it then deteriorates to a farm track which can very slippery in winter.
The road can also sometimes closed in winter and can have bog holes and washouts.
Track type: Gravel and Mud Track composition: Bumpy, Muddy, Undulating Slippery when wet?: Yes Suitable for bikes <650cc? Intermediate Suitable for bikes >650cc? Experienced River crossings? No
This road, sorry track, was what we all enjoy – remote, unmaintained (but not too rough or boggy), wild rabbits everywhere plus great views, hence I highly recommend it.
After you turn right from Pori Road in to Puketoi Road within 500 metres you ride through a tree canopy covered stretch of road and are confronted with a two storey immaculate tudor style home which is part of a large Landcorp farm. You will want to stop and take a photo I guarantee it!
The road then starts to climb and narrow leading to the sign which says “Road not maintained by council” and it’s here you let out an excited “you beauty” and ride on climbing – the road becoming more like a farm track.
At the top and down most of the other side there are no signs of civilisation so ride carefully if alone (like I did) as you probably don’t want to ditch it needing help and have to wait three days for a farm vehicle to pass!
When you finally ride past the farm house on the eastern side and pop out at the bottom of the road there is a hostel here to crash for the night instead of carrying on out to the coast – which on back roads took me at least another couple of hours.
Sadly only got half way through yesterday from Pori rd end.Track was still in good nick for the first few kays .Then it turned to muddy farm track and the mighty Xcx was up to its axles in soft mud on the original just legal bridgstone tyres so had to turn back to Pori rd and out to 52 which was a great little ride in itself.Should have fitted the knobbies back on I had used for Makairo rd ride Doh!
Rode this a couple of weeks ago. Very quiet, stunning views, great place to be alone. Surface varies from nicely graded to patches that would become mud in bad weather, but eminently passable in good weather even on my rather unsuitable choice of motorcycle (a CB500F). And I’ll echo the point above. I was a bit surprised by the isolation; this is best done in company or carrying a tracker if solo.
Yeah, I did it once in winter with a bunch of others. There was plenty of mud and puddles. At least 3 bikes went down. Somehow I managed to keep my DL1000 upright on crappy tyres…
Went through yesterday starting from the Pori Road end. Closed road sign aside continued through the see what the story was with the intention of turning back at the closure. No wonder it is closed but I was committed after the first mud hole as there was no way I was going to get back up through it on my own. Lots of deep mud and bog holes going down the eastern side over a couple of kilometers. Luckily that bad section is all down hill leading to the exit but very very slippery with mud to axles in places. Awesome place!
Went through Fri 27th from pori rd end.Road closed sign still there.Track was fine although very muddy and boggy about half way through.It was raining quite hard and the live stock wasn’t to keen on moving off the road so had to ride around them.all part of the fun.Glad i was solo as it have been a bit of a mission getting a group of bike through all the livestock

There has been a bit of work on this road, these are the first two major repairs from Pori Road end. There was another two similar repairs as well.
I tried going through last week and found road closed signs at each end. Not sure what story is.
I think those signs were there when I went through last. I looked the other way and whistled a happy tune…
