The Severn – Sedgemere Track links The Rainbow Road and The Molesworth Station / Archeron Road, access to this track has only been opened up by DOC in the last year or so and access is only open for 7 weeks from early January to the end of February.
DOC do remind track users to stick to the main trail and continued access will depend on users doing so. There are 2 points where the tracks forks, one fork goes to the farm houses and buildings as this is a working farm, and one leads off into area that is not open to track users. The entire track is marked by Orange arrows and in both cases if you are uncertain look for the orange arrows marking the correct way.
Access from the Molesworth/Archeron Road end is at the Severn River bridge entry point, and from the Rainbow Road end at Lake Sedgemere, where the road is gated just behind the DOC hut.
The Severn – Sedgemere Track is 24km long and works well as a loop ride with the Molesworth and Rainbow roads, making a shorter loop than all the way to each end of the Molesworth or Rainbow roads and basically follows the Alma River valley from point to point. The track is mostly flat and is about a 70/30 ratio of gravel and grassy farm tracks. there’s a couple of shallow river crossings, and several muddy bog holes which seem to have a firm base.

Is this still only open between early Jan and end of Feb?
on 11 November I’m looking at riding form Hanmer and Picton and thought about starting off on the Rainbow track then cutting across to Molesworth, but if this is closed I may need to forgo the Rainbow part of the trip North.
Molesworth Station – Acheron Road – CLOSED
Due to extreme fire danger, the Acheron Road through Molesworth will be closed from Monday 10 February until further notice.
This includes the Severn to Sedgemere 4WD Road.
Gates at the Clarence Bridge and at the Cob Cottage will be locked to prevent unauthorised access.
I wonder if they will re open it, the pictures make it look like its do-able on an 1150GS with knobbies.
The Severn to Sedgemere Track opens for 2024 on January 5th.
