Takiri Road is a nice gravel shortcut that links SH4 with Waimiha and PiroPiro Flats respectively. It runs through a combination of sheep farm, forestry and bush. The road surface changes along with it, changing from dry and open to wet and almost dirt like in some sections.
At you get close to crowning the ridge on the eastern side you get a good photo opportunity of Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe so it’s worth the stop.
I encountered a lone sheep and goats multiple times. Also on the eastern side there was a section of ice on a sunny June day, all things to be weary of on your travels.
Please be mindful of other road users in this area, the locals have had some close calls with wayward riders.

I’ve had some feedback from locals on Takiri Road about some riders being a bit reckless along there. Please have respect for the locals and other road users where ever you are riding in New Zealand.
Hi, I notice Takiri road is on your map to ride, We live at the Mapiu end of it on a farm, I own & ride horses here, I am sick & tired of extremely loud motorbikes ridden by disrespectful riders going far to fast over it, they have put my horses in creeks, through fences & steel gates, While some are extremely courteous there is always that handful here ‘n’ there that ruin it for them, today I was very close to loosing my life because of 4 more idiots so I would like to ask that you please, please, please take our road off your map or at the very least stipulate that they slow the heck down! They are not the only people whom have the right to use the road little own trying to live there life on it
