The Tapu Coroglen Road offers another option for getting from one side of the Coromandel Peninsula to the other and is roughly halfway between Kopu and Coromandel townships on the West side.
As the name might suggest Tapu Coroglen Road runs from Tapu on the West side of the Coromandel Peninsula to Coroglen on the East side of the Pensinula. At Coroglen the Coroglen Pub is a popular stop for riders for refreshments.

While there are a lot of houses along the road traffic is far lighter than the 309 Road. This is mostly due to the Tapu Coroglen Road being much narrower, with a number of short narrow give way sections.

When ridden the road was very smooth with no real gravel base meaning it would be quite slippery if wet.

The Tapu Coroglen road is closed after the Cyclone . There is a major slip about 1/3 the way in from Tapu . You can get a bike through no probs. We came across a car going the other way that was absolutely flying , every corner the whole way through showed marks from his antics, I guess he figured there would be no traffic.

Better east-to-west, or west-east, or doesn’t matter?

Thanks

Badjelly: It doesn’t really matter but it certainly helps to make a nice loop if you head West to East then ride about 10km north on the East coast to pick up the 309 road

Right-o. It’s on the list.

Road closed but made it through ok. Roading crews still finishing up slip repairs but said should be open by Christmas. Overall road in good condition.

Did the track from Tapu to Coroglen then back following very light drizzle which was just enough to keep the dust down without making things slippery. The track had quiet a few corrugations at the Tapu end and there are some very narrow parts due to slip repairs. Straight forward riding without any surprises except for the odd vehicle coming the other way using up more than their fair share of the road. If you don’t go silly it is a pleasant ride.
