Te Arai Point is a scenic beach 5 minutes South of Mangawhai Heads. There are a lot of gravel roads in this area and several ways to get to Te Arai Point but this is one of the longest.
I did this one today. I parked the car and bike trailer at the village hall at Pakiri and then rode the bike to the start point a few kms away. I am a novice off road rider, but very experienced road rider. I ride a road legal wr250r.
Anyway the track is just under 30 kms in each direction. Mostly gravel. A few straights and lots of bends.A bit of road traffic but not much, just be aware on blind corners etc.
Overall I enjoyed the ride. Not technical really but plenty to get the rear spinning and the front squirming. The beach at the far end is really a cracker and was pretty busy when I was there (this is the xmas break
currently).
I recommend downloading the gpx file to your phone as there are a few times you need to choose which direction to go.
Just did this one a couple of days ago.
Not much has changed from previous condition reports, great ride and nice starting point as we are reasonably new to adventure riding.
Added an overnight into the mix out at The Hideout Cottage, which was about 15 minutes from Te Arai Point and it was awesome, highly recommend the place!!!!!
Random dude on a red vespa, jandals, t-shirt and shorts…. no helmet… Huge grin… blasting along the gravel road just after the Pakiri turn off was quite the entertaining addition.
I rode this two days ago (29 Dec, 2024) on my loaded up T7. trail was in great condition and my only fear was the potential of oncoming traffic. easy ride and very scenic views of hills and farmland. highly recommend. I have the stock tires on my T7 (scorpion rally pro) with about 50% left on them…no problems. Go out and enjoy this beautiful route!
Thanks Daniel, I’ll download those and get a page setup for each of them shortly.

Now i am proud. 🙂 Thanks Eddi.
