23km South of Reefton off SH7, Waiuta Road leads 15km inland to what was once a small mining town for the West Coasts richest gold mine. Now all that’s left are a few buildings and mining relics.

The road to Waiuta is mostly sealed with only the last few km being gravel, though as the entire road is narrow and offering great bush views it’s all a fun ride. Once at Waiuta there are several trails leading off to mining locations, some can be ridden and some are for walking only.

At the Waiuta Historic Mine Site is Waiuta Lodge, a 30 bed DOC lodge. Advance booking for Waiuta Lodge is required via the Reefton visitors centre, there are no camping facilties available.
