I’M NOT SURE IF ACCESS IS STILL POSSIBLE ON THIS TRACK.
The tribal land owners have recently evicted and torn down baches that had been on tribal land next to the beach for 40 years, I don’t know if recent land owner changes have impacted beach access as the access is over private land.
Whangaehu is a small settlement on SH3 about 15km South-East of Wanganui, Whangaehu Beach Road comes off SH3 and heads West Southwest towards the coast. The first 5km is sealed road until the road ends at several farms.
At the end of the road a gate on the right is signposted for Whangaehu Beach and a 4×4 track heads over the paddocks. Following the well worn track takes you through several more gates and at about the 3km mark a final gate takes you onto the beach.
Up until 2013 there were bach’s either side of the final gate but these have recently been removed.
The beach itself is very rugged, covered in washed up tree trunks with 4×4 tracks leading between them. From the size and number of the washed up trees and how far up the beach they are spread It’s obvious that when the weather hits the coastline here it can hit it hard. The deep sand can be fun to ride if you are used to it and it provides some good practise.
