Whirinaki Forest is located on the North side of SH5, the Napier to Taupo Road and stretches up to Murapara and Minginui, south east of Rotorua.
Whirinaki Forest is owned by Timberlands Limited and while there are roads all the way through the forest from SH5 to to Minginui and Murapara these are private forestry roads and not open to the public.
There used to be several daytime public easements for access from SH5 to about halfway up through the forest and from Minginui for anglers to access fishing spots, but the entire forest has now been closed to all recreational public access unless you apply for a permit.
