Its a good loop is that but instead of SH2, how about Whakarau Rd to Motu? Keep us informed, I will probably join you.
It is a great loop, but this is a very ambitious ride for one day. Hope your a fast rider who doesn’t like stopping.
Just what I was about to say. Would spoil the fun if you have to hurry. Would be better with an over night in Gisborne? This is the same route (more or less) that another group on here did recently – how was that for time and distance?
We left Whakatane at 9:00am and got to Rosie bay campsite (lake Waikaremoana) around 6pm. Our ride went in the opposite direction and we did take in a side track, but this indicates how slow this route can be.
Another way to do this loop would be to ride from Auckland to Lake Waikaremoana on the Friday, stopping in Rotorua for lunch. From Rotorua it is about an hour to Murupara and then another 2 to 3 hours to the main lake campground (which has cabins and fuel) depending on how fast you ride and how often you stop. The rest of the route you have outlined heading to Opotiki by the end of the Saturday would be quite manageable at a pleasant riding pace with stops, albeit will still be a full day. Some of the sealed bits on this route are as much fun as the gravel. E.g. Tiniroto Road is a quiet twisty scenic stunner! Recommended lunch stop is the Motu-vation Cafe in Motu – great food and coffee plus really friendly owners.
The main point for me is riding through Te Urewera. Any recommendation to go around Te Urewera back to Rotorua? The Motu road is not a die-die-must. Obviously gravel preferred.
I would suggest doing the ride (and it really is a great loop) how Scott mentioned. Rotovags for lunch – night at lake waikaremoana holiday park – re-fuel near Gisborne – from there take Whakarau Rd to the Motu-vation Cafe – Motu to Opotiki. That is a solid days ride. Personally I would much rather stay somwhere like Ohope top 10 holiday park. Following day blast back up to Auckland. Happy days…
‘@enduro0627 Hows the plans coming, Anything decided yet?
I am considering to cut the route shorter.
Nothing decided yet.
There are only me +1 committed to the ride…
I will work out something by the weekend.
Wifey’s birthday that weekend so she gets to choose. Probs won’t be a moto trip but you never know. If she is up for it We would do the Rotorua to Gisborne bit at least (two up on the Vstrom)
Keep us informed, I should be able to make it.
Good morning,
Bad news.
It got confirmed today morning, I am not able to make it because I will need to work on all 4 days of Easter.
I will try to get the plan together for you but cannot promise anything this time.
Andrew
Hello everyone,
Although I am not able to make it to the ride, I have put together a plan for you, if needed.
https://klrramblers.wordpress.com/2017/04/05/update-on-the-easter-tour/
It has the usual stuff, a Google Maps, a link to a GPX file what you can upload into your GPS device, recommended fuel stops and accomodations.
I hope you can make to this tide.
Andrew
Ps. This isn’t the Holy Bible, change the route to your own liking.
Cheers, Anyone else up for an easter ride?
Hi @Brainflex, I’m going to say no, thanks all the same. Don’t think wifey will be keen.
I’ll hopefully get down there when and if things dry out a bit, on the DRZ by myself.
Just as an aside, I did look at the accommodation at Waikaremoana and most of the cabins were booked.
Cheers and thanks Andrew for your efforts!.
Yeah, this ride has been washed away I guess. 🙁 Maybe next year.
Good effort though, maybe later this year. Life got in the way for me.
