The NZTA is to implement the use of mandatory ABS on new motorcycles from April next year. There are exclusions and allowances, e.g “Trial and Enduro motorcycles primarily used off-road or at motor cross events” and “motorcycles designed for agricultural use.” Guess the old DR/DRZ fits in that bracket hey? 🙂

Wow, I suspect that will be the final nail in the coffin for many bikes in NZ unless the manufacturers announce updated versions between now and then, the DR650 and DRZ-400 particularly.
We already know the KLR650 is going, NZ and Australia are basically the only countries still selling out the remaining stock.
I was thinking about this today and how it will make bikes that don’t currently have ABS heavier, though not by as much as I thought it would.
According to a number of articles I looked at current ABS units weigh from 700 grams to 1.6kg depending on whether the unit provides ‘advanced’ ABS or not.
