Falls Dam Road

Take Loop Road off SH85 from either end, Falls Dam Road is nearer the eastern end of the Loop. The access to Falls Dam is a no exit road so you are up for a trip in and out. Nice straight road to begin with then gets more interesting as you climb to the dam itself. Dam is impressive as is the stream running away from it. It has a Morning Glory spillway for those who know what that is.

Loop Road passes through St Bathans, home of the Vulcan Hotel.

There was a washout, when I was there earlier in November. Is it all cleared?

No blockages. I recall some areas were narrow but easily passable on a bike. Nice little road in.

Hiya,

Can’t you still access the entire catchment from the top road? That locked gate is the one and only barrier last time I was up there (last year).

One of my fav roads is Omarama straight through to Falls Dam (between Mt St Bathans and Hawkdun Range).

Sorry, not sure what you are talking about there. What locked gate?

By the dam itself and the round inlet thing (the Morning Glory spillway – thanks for that have always wondered what they were called). There is a locked gate, which I assumed is why you called it a dead end. All the owners of the fishing huts above the dam have a key, and it’s sometimes open. There is some great open riding above that gate, which can be accessed by coming all the way down the catchment of falls dam.

Ah right thanks. Looked like big wide open space up there.
