Same weekend as Phil’s ride in the Naki..
Ah crap. Would you come if they were on sequencial weekends?
If the weather is reasonable I”d be in for that weekend or the weekend on either side of it if you need to change it.
‘@nools @Brainflex @ApewithHumour @Jake Maryniak
Happy for whenever and preference for Minginui Campsite.
Also keen if either side of proposed date 🙂
Lock this date in then, April 14th/15th and the venue as the Mid Okahu Road DOC Campsite.
‘@Black Betty @Craig McAulay @Mike Scherer @ss2fly @jet_black @cottlini @Itamar Bareket @Adrian @relaxed rider @Tim Arlott @Zongie come along.
Sounds good Eddie
I missed last years, so I will do my best to get to this years, as it is on our doorstep, a couple of of others from this side will be coming too. Cheers Col
Bugger, Tauranga half marathon is on that weekend… I’m entered.
Have a good one!
That sounds very good Eddie….
I´ll come along and stay overnight this time !
cheers Tilmann
I’ll be there, looking forward to it.
Im in, I’ll be riding with Colin Kerr.
Should arrive before 4pm.
Looking forward to it Eddie!
The DR is mostly loaded and the weather forecast is looking promising so far.
Unfortunately not able to make it now, hope you all have a great time
Sure your not wimping out just cause it’s snowing at Lake Waikaremoana?
Perish the thought…actually I was looking forward to it to test my new Giant Loop Coyote saddle bag. My stepson has announced he is arriving on Sunday morning for his mother’s birthday all the way from England. We haven’t seen him for 3 years so it’s a bit special.
Yeah we’ll let you off with that excuse
Greetings
I was starting packing when the weather turned foul and I decided to stay home by the fire. Enter sunshine and I am considering joining the ride again.
Does anyone have a definative weather report for the area? I can only find vague Hawkes Bay reports.
I survived the Cold Kiwi last year, but draw the line at riding in snow. My tyres are great on gravel and sand but useless in mud.
Because of where it is there is no definative weather forecast but the forecast in the general area looking ok with showers maybe Saturday morning then fine till maybe more showers Sunday afternoon.
I’d expect something like 6-8 degrees low overnight and a high around 15 during the day and any snow to be long gone. My experience is around there it usually doesn’t get cold enough for the snow to actually build up on the roads anyway.
The last few times I was at Cold Kiwi it was -8 overnight, and colder if you are up on the top plateau with the wind coming straight off the mountain.
these packs of wood from bunnings are 4.6kg, , 8 logs and each log is meant to burn for 1.5hours, Only $7- per pack. So each of us from Gizzy should be bringing a pack each. Hopefully they work as well as the revies say (Samba fire logs) as they really take no room on the bike for what they can do. Cheers Col
I’m still saving my money for panniers, but I should be able to strap a bag to the back seat and load up the top-box with enough gear to handle an overnighter. I’ll see you guys there!
Apologies but the sole Dannevirke participant is now officially not coming. My bike failed it’s wof, comprehensively.
Tyres, chain and a worn suspension bush. None really a surprise but inconvenient. My margins have been cut a bit fine evidently.
I’ll be at the next one even if I have to put the bike on a trailer!
I wouldn`t get too upset if you turned up in a car given the circumstances
Modified r/h side rack for Dirt Bagz today after work and will do l/h side tomorrow. Built the racks originally for my Beta, they should get much more use on the XR…never got around to install them until now.
Looking forward to catch up with you guys !
Tilmann
Cheers mate 🙂 see you next year!
Packed and ready to ride, really looking forward to this camp. See you all there tomorrow afternoon.
I’ll be finishing my packing after dinner. Just picked up essential supplies, firewood and bourbon.
The weather looks Ok, maybe some showers Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon but otherwise overcast but dry.
I’ve packed the kitchen sink….
But seriously, my winter sleeping bag is bulky as is my tent, and half of the bag on top is firewood, plus I decided to bring a chair this year. Usually all my gear fits in the 2 panniers with the tent across the back seat.
A good weekend was had by me, and the other guys seemed to enjoy themselves as well.
The ride from Hamilton to Murapara was light rain. I had sprayed my trousers with Nikwax rain proofing stuff about a month beforehand and was pleased that no water got through. From Murapara to Okahu Road was dry and it mostly stayed that way into the evening apart from the occasional small shower.
Okahu Road wasn’t signposted so I only spotted it due to the DOC sign which was a fair way off the main road.
We all got set up, @MarkH had his hammock again which looks very comfortable but takes ages and requires 3 arms to put up.
The dual purpose KLR found a new purpose as a buffet table for snacks
Once set up 3 of us when for a ride up to the end of Okahu Road. There were a lot of washouts along the way and we met a guy who was here during the Edgecumbe floods last year, they had to be helicoptered out and their vehicles were trapped on Okahu Road for a month. I didn’t take any pictures but did have the GoPro running so will post some video later.
James has probably the coolest V-Strom I have ever seen in real life, it sounds good too.
@relaxed rider made us all look like pussies with our prepackaged camping food while he cooked lamb chops and grilled capsicum over the fire.
The boys had thought I was weird for asking them to being firewood but they shut up once it got going. It was lucky we did as while there was plenty of deadfall it was all wet.
The next morning we all packed up and headed off. The Gisbourne boys and I ended up riding together towards Te Teko and @CaptainCol had mentioned the Aniwhenua Dam was worth a look so we stopped there briefly. The dam itself was nothing worth mentioning but the spot was pretty nice.
At Te Teko we parted ways and I caught up with friends who live there while the Gisbourne boys carried on taking the scenic route home.
