Hello NZED adventure riders. What a great web site, I’m impressed. I don’t know how I stumbled onto it, but what a fascinating time waster checking out all those dirt roads and tracks. Since I was a gawky skinny kid getting bullied at high school maps and far places always held mystique and adventure for me. Here I am for only the second time on this site of yours feasting on all the adventures waiting for me.... “bring it on”. Bluey and I just finished a 6500km autumn sojourn around the South Island a couple of weeks ago. I did all the cooking and photography and girl watching and paid for the fuel while Bluey took care of the carrying department. Because I chose to be self contained Bluey had a fare bit to lug around like bed rolls tents n stuff, but never complained and we got on famously. Sorry, Bluey is my Harley. We were disappointed at times not being able poke our noses down some of the many interesting dirt roads, especially rounding the Catlin coastline. The problem with Bluey, he has a flat thingy that turns the back wheel around and stones get flicked up into his interior and end up punching holes in it. If it’s raining, stones don’t stick to wet smooth tyres and we can check out the gravel roads. Tell you what.... there’s nothing worse seeing a grown man cry while standing at the spare parts counter. In fact I was crying blood by the time I paid for the third thingy (belt). ‘Jeeze’... I couldah bought a good second hand BSA Bantam with what they cost. I betcha nunofya ever saw a dirt bike with belt drive eh!! All of this kinda set things in motion, and boy.... how quick an idea germinates. Cutting to the chase, there is a Honda Africa in Japan with my name on it due to arrive in 6 or 7 weeks. God the waits painful.... I get drunk every night so I don’t think about it. Joking aside, the bloody thing should be called a 2020 model because more than half the year has wondered off already. ‘Yeah think about that’.... who’ed be a dealer eh! Anyway getting back to your site trendsetters and fellow adventurers, the first thing I did was check out how many adventurers from Hawke’s Bay were registered and I nearly dropped my beer. There were hundreds.... NOT. ‘Crikey’... to be honest what was amazing is I’m the only one unless; please correct me if I’ve got the wrong end of the stick. It’s not as if we’re the strong quite types in the bay that like riding alone and god help me I’ve done enough of that. I personally can enjoy riding in big groups occasionally, but yah can’t beat a couple of good mates that can be relied on eh! I was intrigued with the scary guy... you know.... the one with the mask, cos he’s a 1200cc man and I’m god help me a 50cc man. I guess big things have little beginnings and soon I’ll excitedly venture off the tar into NZ’s backwaters. Bring it on I say. By the time my steed arrives I might have an understanding about the workings of the site. I might even be a 550 man because I acquired a Tom Tom Rider 550. I’ve never owned a travel gps and have always used my phone. Apparently to all intense and purposes, the 550 has made a huge step beyond the Garmins. “Awe shit” ..... sorry I get a bit carried away talking off road stuff. The structure and ideas within this site tell me there are some passionate and experienced minds out there behind the scenes doing the hard yards making the site what it is. I look forward to meeting you. There’s no limit to the fun a dirt bike gives and even Bluey will agree. Last weekend (QBW) on a 10/10 day Bluey and I headed up to Lake Tutira on the Napier Wairoa road then cut south across the in-between bit to the Napier Taupo road. With the sun behind me (planned because the ole GoPro was doing its thing) Bluey took up the challenge. There were a few sphincter clenching moments as Bluey sorted out how to keep his feet black side down. Being able to break traction with the back wheel so the front does’nt sledge was the tricky bit but if not attempted made for a slow ride. My mate on his 690KTM who I met half way was in his element. Oh god I hope the ship coming out from Japan doesn’t sink. I must away and study those maps again.
