New mid-range twin confirms fresh direction for KTM

These are the first images of KTM’s new mid-range model – the first bike in the firm’s history to have a parallel-twin engine layout.

KTM bosses have been intimating for some time that a new mid-capacity engine was in development, but the suggestion was that it would be a V-twin, in keeping with the firm’s commitment to singles and V-twins, so the parallel configuration is both a surprise and a serious departure. This is the first time anything has been spied in the metal, and it’s clear that the project is pretty well advanced.

There is no official technical information available about the new engines, but we understand there will be more than one variant stretching in range from around 600cc up to a maximum of 800cc. The spy photographer who took the images described the engine’s firing order as sounding like a V-twin, which suggests the firm have used a 270-degree crank to mimic a V-twin firing order, and to inject some character into the engine’s delivery, while boosting torque at low rpm.

Parallel-twin engine designs have become increasingly favoured in recent years for a variety of reasons. They are cheap to produce and design, compact, fuel-efficient and also offer huge advantages in terms of packaging.

The other significant benefit of using a parallel-twin is its ease of packaging, giving KTM the versatility to easily create other genres of bike around a single engine. Slotting something like a 750cc parallel-twin motor into a mid-range adventure bike would make for a chassis and engine layout that would leave plenty of space for an airbox and a large fuel tank to be housed well out of the way from potential stone damage. Yamaha and Honda have joined the likes of BMW and Kawasaki in using modern, lightweight parallel-twins in recent years, and clearly KTM have taken notice.

As with many recent KTMs, there looks to be a large amount of component sharing in evidence. Not only does this speed up bike development, but it massively reduces costs, something that will be key to the firms’ plans for rapid expansion.

MCN understands that the lowest capacity of this new engine platform has not been set, but that the upper limit has been capped at 800cc. Our sources also suggest that these bikes are at least another two years from reaching showrooms.

Once in production, these new engines will be also be made available for use in the Husqvarna model range, further bolstering the sister firm’s range options.

All this activity is being underpinned by the growth at KTM headquarters in Mattighofen, Austria, which has recently undergone extensive expansion.

KTM CEO Pierer told MCN last year: “We are spending around €700million (£500million) per year on R&D, covering everything from road bikes through to Moto3 and all of our off-road competition.

“We are into a new stage of development for KTM. Every year the quality of our products will go up, our dealer network will get bigger and we think we have the prospect of selling 500,000 motorcycles a year thanks to the work we are doing in developing markets. Every bit of success in those new markets helps pay for better and better bikes in the European markets.”

This has got me extremely interested indeed. Knowing them, when THEY bring out a mid-weight twin it won’t weigh as much as a bloody Lancaster Bomber as does the new Africa Twin!
I’ll looking at buying a new bike in 11 months time and counting! Mmmmm, could this be it?

Oh well, I won’t be waiting that long. I’ll settle for a kitted out 690 instead. At least the motor is well proven…

I’ll be looking very closely at this too. Maybe my Ducati goes in favour of a light weight KTM…….

Some very blurry spy shots have emerged from MCN.com of what is supposed to the the new KTM 800 Adventure.

KTM make brilliant big-capacity adventure bikes and now they look set to unleash an 800cc contender to take on rivals from Honda, Triumph and BMW. This all-new KTM 800 Adventure model is expected to be officially revealed next year.

Our long-lens shots were grabbed near KTM’s factory in Mattighofen, Austria, and show for the first time the bike which will share the 800cc parallel-twin that will debut first in the KTM 800 Duke later this year (as reported in last week’s MCN). Our photographer only managed to grab a handful of spy shots before the prototype disappeared from view, but we can see enough detail to judge how critical this machine is to KTM as the firm plugs gaps in its range.

Husqvarna were bought from BMW to be a part of the KTM empire several years ago with the intention that the brand will become Europe’s third best-selling manufacturer with a range of bikes that will share every engine used by KTM from 125cc through to 1301cc.

This new Adventure offering is expected to appeal to those wanting something less intimidating – and maybe easier on the wallet – than the current 1050 or 1190 options.

KTM clearly want this machine to be capable in all conditions, especially off road, and will have taken on board just how well the Honda Africa Twin has sold this year. The less powerful, softer Honda, at £10,499 is the UK’s best-selling bike over 125cc so far in 2016.

The Triumph Tiger 800 range and the BMW F800GS models will also be in KTM’s line of fire.

The new Adventure 800 boasts an all-new swingarm, chassis, exhaust system, subframe, fuel tank and front end, meaning that won’t be much, beyond the motor, that it shares with the planned new Duke model.

The rough state of this bike suggests it’s still a fairly long way from a showroom. KTM boss Stefan Pierer recently told MCN that the 800 Duke would be the first of the new 800s to appear with an adventure model to follow.

While Pierer wouldn’t be drawn on the exact timing of either model, MCN understands the 800 Duke will be launched later this year as a 2017 model and the 800 Adventure will follow in late 2017 as a 2018 model and it’s expected to cost around £9000.

At the EICMA show overnight KTM showed a prototype Duke with the 800 engine.

The all-new parallel-twin engine of around 800cc, has been named the LC8c, with the ‘c’ denoting ‘compact’.

The rumour mill at EICMA is that Husqvarna will debut an adventure styled 800 model during the Milan show.

So the KTM 790 / 800 Adventure is still a prototype but some details were released about the 790 Duke which uses the same 790cc Parallel twin engine.

The Duke engine is producing 103.3bhp at 9000rpm and max torque of 63.5ftlb at 8000rpm and weighs in at a claimed 169kg dry. The parallel twins 8 valves actuate via DLC-coated finger followers, has electronic fuel injection, two balancer shafts, a semi dry-sump with external oil cooler and a 6 speed gearbox.

The Duke also offers optional connectivity to your phone via the KTM My Ride app.

With KTM My Ride your smartphone can be tethered to the bike via Bluetooth, giving you full control over incoming calls and an audio player. All the information pops up on the bike´s display and you manage this optional extra with the mode switch, keeping your hands where they belong. On the handlebar.

KTM 790 Adventure R

KTM has stated the RC8c parallel twin has been retuned for a wider torque spread compared to the 63.5ftlb of the road going Duke, but there’s no word yet on how that will affect the 103.3bhp peak HP that the Duke boasts.

Other details now known are that the fuel tanks are very low mounted for a low Centre of Gravity and are large enough for a 400km range, and allow for a lower than usual seat height for an adventure bike.

, Chris Birch, eight times New Zealand enduro champion, recently rode the KTM 790 prototype and said: “I’m honestly blown away by the new KTM 790 Adventure R. Naturally, I’ve got a lot of experience on enduro bikes and the awesome ability of the big KTM Adventure models, and this just feels like the perfect combination of them both.”

Oops,

Just like the recent BMW 1250GS leak before it’s official launch a KTM marketing sheet has emerged of the KTM 790 Adventure R.
The only thing it tells us that wasn’t already known is the seat height of 880mm.

Here’s the specs for the new KTM 790 Adventure and Adventure R.

The difference between the 2 models is the R has 40mm more suspension travel which adds more ground clearance and a higher seat height allowing more aggressive off road use, also the Adventure R has a slightly steeper steering head angle so presumably they don’t share the same frame.

As usual we have updated our Adventure – Dual Sport Motorcycle specifications comparison chart with these new models.

I must say, but I’m slowly falling out of love with the KTM 790 Adventure R.

This is mostly due to the fact that KTM has gone El Cheapo on what is a premium priced bike, for its category.

The current quoted price on the 790 Adventure R is $23,800

Here are a couple of the things that I think could have been done better for that sum of money…

Clutch Lever… cable?! Really KTM?! This must be the about the only off-road aimed KTM using a cable clutch. Heck, even the 65cc kids bike has a hydraulic clutch lever. Where’s the Brembo or Margura?!

Brakes… house brand…
Once again, where’s the the Brembo’s or Margura’s, KTM?!

If this bike had been launched at about 20% cheaper (around the $19,000 – $20,000 mark), then those cost cuts could have been overlooked.

But the fact that a 1090 Adventure R (with Brembo’s, hydraulic clutch, bigger engine etc) is just 7% more (at $25,500) makes one feel kinda ripped off… doesn’t it?!

Yes, granted it’s a different bike, for different purposes, but surely the fact that it’s supposed to me more off-road orientated than its bigger Adventure R brothers means that it shouldn’t just be a cheaply made Duke 790 shoved into an off-road frame.

The bike still looks awesome, and I’m sure it is far more capable than my riding abilities. I just had higher hopes for it, and especially for that price-tag.

If you are buying a KTM 790 maybe look at getting an aftermarket bashplate before you take it anywhere too serious.

This one hit a rock which bent the bashplate enough to crack the sump casing. The factory bashplate is 1.8mm thick.

– going to borrow a 790 as soon as they come in?

The KTM 790 has arrived on our shoes with multiple dealers showing bikes being prepared for their new owners.

On TradeMe they are being advertised for $21,999 plus on road costs.
