Hi all posted a few posts on Face Book tracks around the Wairarapa area Featherson, Greytown and Lake Ferry so the Wellington Adventure Riders get an opportunity for a quick blast over the hill and straight into the gravel, Plan on doing a ride this Monday that being tomorrow. My bike is a F800GS been used and has knobblies, looking at doing Haurangi Road then into Sutherlands Hut. The road will present no issues looks like gravel on the map, however I have not done the tack into Sutherlands Hut, any rider out there that have done the track, if so what is it like, I’ll poke my BMW front fender in and give it a go. Cheers Dave

Did you end up doing this?

Ive been to Sutherlands a couple of times. its one of my current favourite due to a couple of technical bits

Very possibly. I was supposed to be out today, but got caught out with a duff wheel bearing (I thought I had spares & realised after the bearing shop closed that I’d already used them).

I’ve been hanging out for a ride for a while, & a more technical one would be better than a long day ride.

Been a wee while since I’ve been in there…

Would be keen if I can get the time off work.Last time I rode through there I was on a mighty z440 in the company of an ex cop bike and some cb360s.I think I posted a photo on here once sometime ago

, cool so hopefully weather holds up for us to have a fun day.
I have emailed Todd at Motomart to see if he could re-email my message to his list of adventure riders to see if we can get a bigger group together, not sure if he will do so but yeah should be fun nevertheless 😉 Looking forward to it

I’ve heard that Todd has departed Motomart. I trust someone else is managing his elist?

viferpilot
2026 years ago

Interested. I wonder what unhingedlizard meant by technical bits:
… been to Sutherlands a couple of times. its one of my current favourite due to a couple of technical bits” (particularly at this time of the year (with TKC70’s) ).

In any case Haurangi Rd is a nice gravelly all the way into the Waikuku Lodge (situated on the verge of the Aorangi Forest Park)

Mario Gregor
2026 years ago

HI yeah I reckon we will find out soon enough what the technical bits are haha. I got 1200gs so will see if I won’t cry at half way point in fear. I got TKCs as well so fingers crossed is not to gnarly.

Here is the route I though we could take:
From Martinborough, Jellicoe st, White Rock Rd, Ruakokoputuna Rd, Haurangi Rd to Washpool Hut or to the end of the road I guess. Then turn back and at Ruakokoputuna turn left to Blue Rock Rd, Dry river road and Lake Ferry road back to Martinborough.

Yes I have been told Todd doesn’t work at Motomart anymore but John Goss replied that he emailed all adventure riders on their mailing list about the ride so will see who will turn up. I haven’t heard from any other people then and .

Hi Mario, definite for this one. We usually do a coffee at Martinborough before we go in, & take some food with us, so that any delays are catered for.

BTW, your google maps is for Washpool Hut, which is not Sutherlands Hut

Yeah, excellent ride, scare in some places and yes big THANK YOU to all guys who came and who were helping me to get up off of the mud and up the steep river banks, and of course for the moral support. Without that all I would still be stuck in the river.
here are some shots from the Sunday!

Any ideas on when the next trip is?

Hi Mitch, subscribe to this thread (at the top of the page). You’ll get an email if anyone is posting.

More than likely we’ll be out next fine weekend (not this one then). If anyone has some suggestions as to where you’d like to go, we could look at that (remembering that’s mid winter & some places are weather dependent).

Anyone doing a writeup for the Ocean Beach ride?

Box.a.Bits
2026 years ago

Ocean Beach – 1st Jul 17

Last minute ride decision to join a ride organised by Chris Adams via facebook. Met at Caltex Rimutukas at the gentlemanly hour of 10.00am. Ride participants were Chris (DR650), Steve (KLR650), Brent (KLR650), Neil (WR250R), & me, Box’a’bits (R100GS).

I’d been having carb flooding issues on the left carb, but thought I’d sorted it by dropping the float bowl & allowing things to flush through. But no, arrived at Rimutex, & immediately started dribbling. Although thinking about it, maybe Gus was just in lust with the Valkerie we parked next to.

Loads of Lions supporters leaving Wellington, some in Campervans, others sweating off the hangovers on cycles. Busy on the hill, but we managed to cut a path through. A little damp on the road, but no real issues

Coffee & a savory scone at Everest Cafe at Featherston. Nicer sitting outside.

The ride out to Ocean Beach was scenic with moody clouds sitting down over the hills, & no wind. Dropped tyre pressures just before the seal ran out. Joined there by Richard, on his Motard KTM.

The track at Ocean Beach was rougher than normal – they’ve obviously had some weather over there. Past the Doc Camp the puddles were much higher than normal – we just ploughed thru.

Unfortunately the ride ended before the scree slip – because of a new slip. We could perhaps have gotten thru’ that – but the consequences for getting it wrong were high. We could also have gone along the beach under the slip – but the tide was coming up.

Chris put up his drone – here’s a link to the footage.

https://www.facebook.com/k1w33d/videos/pcb.10155724806649396/10155724791479396/
Raw Drone footage of the slip from Chris Adams

The float issue came back to bite me. Most of my tank of gas had disappeared. So while Steve, Chris & Neil decided to re route to the outlet of Lake Onoke, Brent & I decided to call it a day & shoot back to Featherston.

Hit reserve just coming down the first sealed hill after Ocean Beach, but made it back okay. Good job we didn’t get further along the track.

I understand Neil & Richard also did the Rimutaka Pylon track on the way back.

Back home, the outlaws had arrived, so that was a good excuse for some garage time. I pulled the left carb, & found a small piece of fuel line rubber (I’d just replaced the fuel lines) lodged above the float needle. So hopefully that issue is now resolved. I have no wish to become the latest BMW suicide bomber on the morning commute….

Pongaroa in the northern Wairarapa now has a petrol station after locals crowd funded the cost for building one.

Motomart Summer Adventure Ride to Northcroft Road 17 December 2017

I went on the Motomart summer adventure ride today that started at the Motomart shop in Lower Hutt and then went via Masterton to do the Northcroft Road loop. It seemed like it may as well have been a BMWOR ride except for the fact I took my Honda XR250L and one other person rode a Honda, an Africa Twin CRF1000. There was also one Kawasaki there.

The Northcroft Road loop detail can be found on this site here https://www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/…/nort…/northcroft-road/

Photos follow:
1. The line up forming at the shop – Motomart Lower Hutt.
2. The run leader showed up.
3. We regrouped opposite the Mobil Station on Ngaumutawa Road in Masterton.
4. Scorching hot day for us too at around 30 degrees in Masterton.
5. Nice views high up on Northcroft Road.
6. The track was grassy and surprisingly green on Northcroft Road.

Motomart Summer Adventure Ride to Northcroft Road 17 December 2017/2

More photos:
1. At the corner with Dorsets Road.
2. Then we headed out Stronvar way via the Castlepoint Road and hung a right onto Te Parae Road at Tauweru.
3. The group did some frying in the sun at Tauweru.
4. Pretty hot in motorcycle gear at Tauweru, and it also meant the gravel roads were rather dusty.
5. Still frying at Taueweru.

Motomart Summer Adventure Ride to Northcroft Road 17 December 2017/3

Basically you’ll see above I got very few photos on Northcroft Road with the group not even stopping for a break until we were at Tauweru.

More photos:

1. Then we wanted to check out what JNL(NZ forestry and wood-processing business) have been doing illegally blocking off legal roads and this is a gate on Fernglen Road Ngahape.
2. Boys thinking about it.
3. Nice little dam and lake.
4. Don’t like turning around at blocked roads.
5. Still chewing over it.

Motomart Summer Adventure Ride to Northcroft Road 17 December 2017/4

Then it was off to lunch at the pub.

More photos:
1. Parked outside the pub (the Gladstone Inn).
2. Bit of a line up forming.
3. An old guy was there with his old Harley Davidson (Aermacchi) 350.
4. A Transalp was there too, but not on our ride.
5. Right kind of hat for this hot farm country with a cool drink.
6. Relaxing waiting for our food for lunch.

Motomart Summer Adventure Ride to Northcroft Road 17 December 2017/5

More photos at lunch break at Gladstone and then afternoon tea break at Martinborough.

1. Still wearing my KiwiBiker shirt after all these years.
2. This is the adventure version of the KB shirt.
3. After lunch at Gladstone we were obliged to go home via Martinborough and have afternoon tea there. It was getting a bit late by then and some of our haunts had already packed up but Medici was open.
4. The Kiwi Adventure Biker shirt says we like it rough and dirty. Well today wasn’t really rough but sheesh it was hot and dusty.
5. A few clouds forming behind me there but it was still over 30 deg at Martinborough in the late afternoon.
6. Happy with his day.

That’s all folks.

Figure that it’s been way too long since I was out & about, so am heading out this Sunday 4th Mar, via Martinborough (coffee), Homewood Rd, Riversdale, Tinui (lunch), Packspur Rd & Castlepoint.

Meet point is at Rimutex at 8.30am.

Mostly gravel roads. One downhill at Packspur Road might be feel a bit sketchy on road tyres on a big adventure bike for a noobie rider.

I have a new (old) bike to test out.
