my son and I have KTM dirt bikes that we would like to ride on.
is this possible? legal?

Most if not all these tracks are public roads, ergo, yes, a bike needs to be road registered. Dirt bikes would be used on farm trails, farm adventure rides etc.
The definition of a road is actually quite broad, essentially where any member of public has access, so includes beaches etc.
As Gremlin said, 99% of the tracks on here are public roads so bikes need to be road legal.

The Pureora Forest – The Block track leads to a free 4wd area that would be suitable for dirt bikes.

We are in Auckland and would welcome any other suggestions for legal off road riding with an unregistered bike.
My son enjoys the gravel roads and I would be keen to check a few out.
The Sandpit, off Rimmer Road is the most easily accessible off road site. Lots of sand tracks as the name implies. I found them very hard to communicate with, best just rock up and have a crack.
