looks like I need to replace the YUASA battery in my Tiger 800 and have got a bit of a shock at the $400 price tag – are there any recommendations for alternatives ?, or should I stick to the name brand ?

The Katana Powersports batteries sold at Repco, Supercheap Auto etc is a brand by Century Batteries who are a subsidiary of Yuasa. Can’t say I’ve personally had one but as probably as close you can get to a Yuasa without the $$$. Depends on how urgently you need one you could hold out until a store has a sale.
