Nestled in the remotest hills of Otago’s Dunedin district, not much appears to remain of the old gold mining settlement of Nenthorn.
You know you’re going somewhere seriously out of the way when you’ve barely started and you’re already on a dirt road.
McGrath Rd gave way to the atmospherically-named Ramrock Rd, taking us deeper into the hills. We navigated around several escaped sheep to cross the north branch of the Waikouaiti River at Bucklands Crossing, and it was beyond this point that the scenery began to get truly grand.
It soon became clear that we had in fact reached the town of Nenthorn, having stumbled across what remains of Patrick Talty’s St Bathans Hotel.

We glanced around to see if we could see anything else of note and I espied an orange capped post sticking out of the tussock below us. So that is where we headed next, to find that it marked the site of an open shaft.
Hi all. Have many been down this track? Just trying to get a gauge on the 4wd track side is like. Is it a wetland or dry? Thanks in advance
