Today, 11th July, is the last day the draft Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024 is open for consultation. So if you want to have your say, get a wiggle on! This will be implemented as rules for Road controlling authorities e.g NZTA, Local Councils and their branches to set speed limits by nationwide.
It was sold as a reversal of the blanket speed limit reduction implemented since 2020, but there is a lot more to it. Now it only includes the reversal of state highways and urban streets, with rural roads (generally of most importance to motorcyclists) not part of the reversals. I encourage you to read it and give your feedback.
The most applicable changes proposed and NEW rules that will effect adventure riders and motorcyclist in general will be:
Some State Highways will be reversed from 80 to 100km/h for example.
There is nothing about the reversal of the speed reductions on secondary roads by RCA’s before 2020 however.
Then new rules added will also be as follows:
Mountainous or hill corridors 60-80km/h
Unsealed roads 60-80km/h
Beaches 10-60km/h
River beds, Unconventional (ULR?) 10-30km/h
