Any interest in an overnight camp on the everning of April 1st?
I’m looking at doing an overnight camp at the Boulders DOC site on Saturday April 1st.
Boulders is a small free DOC site South of Opotiki with minimal facilities, i.e. a long drop and a couple of fireplaces so anyone attending will need to be fully self sufficient with tent, sleeping bag, food and cooker if required and a roll of loo paper. A couple of bits of wood for a communal fire would help too.
As the DOC site is First In First served and only has 16 standard DOC tent sites there could be others camping there so we may not fit many in.
The access to Boulders campsite is described as “via a gravel road with a low ford to cross. The track down to the campsite is steep and rough, if unsure park up on the road instead.”

Sounds like a plan. I’m keen.
Bump, anyone else interested?
Depends on weather but yes interested.
I’m still keen… Weather pending. Anyone else from the farce book side interested?
Well the weather is looking ok, it’s supposed to clear up on Friday.
I’m keen, sounds like fun.
I should be tagging along. Got any details on where to meet up n when?
The main idea was for a evening gathering at the campsite with the adventure being up to how everyone gets there.
I chose ‘Farewall to Summer’ as Daylight savings ends Saturday night.
I might look at taking the DR for a ride, be good to try out my new (2nd hand) Russell Day-Long seat.
Should be around 3-3.5 hours each way which would be a reasonable test.
I’d be bringing my hammock to hang in.
Is this catch up all go?
I’m still keen. Should turn up at Boulders around 4pm.
It has rained a lot this way over the last week, so dry wood will be scarce. I’ll bring what I can pack, but the more the merrier.
Very good Idea, I´m happy to tag along as well, will bring some dry wood in the backpack.
Looking forward to see you there.
Definately come along, I’ll have my Day Long seat there too, possibly the only 2 of them in NZ.
Yep, I’ve started packing tonight.
I’ll see if I can stick a few bits of wood on board as well, along with a firestarter maybe.
Packed and ready.
Most of that big bag on the back in firewood.
It was a great evening with fellow riders, drinks around a fire. I’ll have some pictures ready tonight.
The location turned out to be awesome, a very basic campsite in a great site beside a river.
This was the other location I had considered but fires aren’t allowed and you’ve gotta have a fire to have drinks around: http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/hawkes-bay/places/mohaka-river-area/things-to-do/everetts-campsite/
I put some pics about my ride to and from the event in my Eddie’s random adventures thread.
The sign for the campsite at the Te Waiti Stream Road turnoff was hidden
There were 2 small fords heading in
The track down to the campsite was narrower and steeper than this pictures suggests
We all arrived with about half an hour of each other and set up camp
The camp is next to a river
Discussing who was going to attempt to ride across the river
How many adventure riders does it take to cook dinner? @MarkH cheated by bringing left over KFC from Opotiki
We all brought firewood so after dinner the fire got going and many lies were told
