Ride out to check out Karioitahi Beach.
As far as I can guesstimate low tide should be about 1:30pm but tide tables aren’t published that far out so I could be wrong.
Meeting and leaving times from Auckland and Hamilton to be arrange in the forum thread.
You must have a beach permit as below!!!!
Permits now Required!
As of September 1st 2015 Auckland Council require all vehicles accessing Muriwai and Karioitahi beaches to obtain a permit beforehand.
Permits last a year, are free and can be obtained online via the Auckland Council website at: http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/en/licencesregulations/drivingonbeaches/Pages/home.aspx
A separate permit must be applied for each vehicle to be used.
Auckland Council have also published a set of rules for driving on Muriwai and Karioitahi beaches: http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/en/licencesregulations/drivingonbeaches/Pages/home.aspx
got my permits…wierd.
and u need separate ones for kariotahi and muriwai…
Got both, too.
will be nice to see another X at the ride. BTW I know of one going pretty damn cheap if anyone you know might be keen. 2007, 30,000kms, very strong motor (i test rode it, belongs to a mate), he would take $6000 for it.
I got my Britannia Lynx fairing now, but not enough time to install b4 this ride. Shame, its going to look and function GREAT!
Hey this ride is the same day as the DGR (Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride), so any chance we can ride both? It would mean starting the Kariotahi ride a little later like midday or 1pm? Can’t seem to find out the start times or start locations for either ride…..wait the DGR starts at 10AM somewhere in AKL (secret starting place).
So can we start this Kariotahi ride after midday in order to ride both? Please and thank you!
This ride is dependant on tide times, and I think my calculations were a bit out. Low tide might not be till about 4.
I’m thinking of getting out there 2ish. high tide is ~10am so by 2 the water should be a fair way out.
Hi Eddie,
I have been away for a few days, is this still on?
The weather is looking ok so at this stage I’m still planning on going out.
Sry guys. I have to cancel it. Someone need a hand by his move. Hopefully the next time.
Ok- still keen. Let me know what the story is later in the week
I’m keen! And I’ve got the permit. I figured I would go up north to the heads and see what is available in terms of roads and maybe a lunch, then meet at the beach for 2pm. Looks like the roads are all sealed though. Pete
I’m aiming to be there about 2pm from Hamilton.
I can’t find tide times for Karioitahi Beach specifically but for Raglan High tide is 10:09 and low tide is 16:07 so it shouldn’t be too different from that?
From pictures I’ve seen the beach is pretty flat and shallow so there should be room to ride the beach by then. Are yuou going up to Manukau Heads/Awhitu? I haven’t been up there myself yet.
Yep, I thought of going to the Orua Bay Beach Camp. Never been there myself. I figure you are about right based on Raglan tides, for 2 pm beach ride and I’ll be heading back to North Shore probably around 3 or so. We could meet up at say 11.30 to go north from Waiuku if that suits.
I am coming from manukau so could meet at Waiuku unless it is pissing down as the weather forecast doesn’t loo all that fash
Is there a convoy heading up from the Waikato?
‘@facebook-keithfenwick11, what time will you be at the Waiuku?
I’m going to fix that facebook bit in your name too, just figured out how to do it.
I am going to meet the Auckland crew at midday unless I get a better offer. I have a leave pass all day as long as I am home about 4ish so I should make use of it:-)
Just for you guys who don’t do FB or are morally apposed to it :), the Auckland guys are meeting at 12pm McDonald Bombay or 12:30 BP Bombay whichever you prefer planning to be at Beach about 1pm for low tide 2;10pm (don’t forget to put your clocks forward tonight or there wont be anyone there)
Ok, I’m going to head up earlier so I can get to the top.
i heard 12-1230pm at Papakura Autobahn so thats where we’re meeting? otherwise i guess beach at 1pm?
Bombay not Papakura
I’m off, see you buggers at the beach at 1.
Great ride today, 7 bikes in total. We made it as far south as possible and as far North as we were willing to go without knowing whether there was an exit point further north.
To go any further we’d have had to go over some rocks which may not have been passable if we’d gone a lot further and found we had to come back the same way after the tide had started coming back in. That just means we’ll have to do another ride taking the road further up the peninsula and seeing if we can find any access points further up.
Those of us who actually arrived on time 😉

Karioitahi Beach

At the south end of the beach. The sandbar you can see just over the water is the top of Port Waikato Beach.

Jeff (@octopusenvy) all the way from Ahipara joined us.

Regroup by the rocks as far North as we went.

This is what happens if you get your vehicle stuck on the beach

Another wreck, long gone.
To the North it looks like the only possible access is from W Coast Road, there are other roads marked on maps but they don’t actually exist.
Where the black 4×4 was parked there is access off Robertson Road beside the Waiuku Piston club, but it does look like that access might have a gate.
