Yamaha’s funky 857cc, triple-cylinder MT-09 nakedbike has been one of the revelations of the 2014 model year. Its popularity has already spawned the Street Rally and Sport Tracker spin-off models, as well as the LAMS-approved MT-07 twin-cylinder model.
While the Street Rally and Sport Tracker are just variations on the MT-09 idea, Yamaha’s next move is one from outside the square – an MT-09 based adventure sports-tourer which will be called the FJ-09 in America.
To prove the idea isn’t just a product of someone’s fertile imagination, AMCN has uncovered patent images filed by Yamaha. As well as proving the FJ-09 is on the drawing board, they also provide us with a clue about the FJ-09’s technical specifications.
The suspension, frame, engine, wheels and brakes are all taken straight from the existing MT-09. New bits include the fairing and screen, as well as a much higher seat unit. There are also XT-style mounting-brackets for panniers and a top box.
The instruments are new: comprising a simple rectangular LCD display with a more utilitarian look. The information displayed will probably remain the same as the MT-09.
Here are some of the images used on the US patent application

So we all now know that the Yamaha MT-09 adventure bike turned out to be yet another glorified road bike, however a true off road version was shown at the Osaka motorcycle show earlier this year.
This is not an official factory effort but the work of a japanese customiser.
