ok, I’ve been in country 3 months now, and my Tiger is racking up the road miles, but that is it. Anyone want to show the American places near Auckland?
Sorry not from Auckland, but if your looking for gravel rides google earth is your friend. Used in conjunction with the map of all unsealed roads found here under “Tracks and GPS”. West of Waiwera might be a good place to start looking.
Let me know if you’re still looking. I don’t know many routes, but happy to share what I do.
I’m happy to go for rides around Auckland.
Planning on going for a ride Saturday up to Bayleys Beach and back starting from Kaiwaka taking in plenty of gravel roads from Maungaturoto, Waiotira and to Dargaville . Made a route on basecamp keen to go and get lost if anyone wants to tag along.
Bugger, I cannot do tomorrow…
Next time…
Ah, missed this but did go for a ride (Panmure>Puhoi>Muriwai>Panmure) yesterday. Saw a few adv type bike parked up in Orewa – was that any of you lot?
Ride has reminded me I need to buy some new wet weather gear… 🙂
I did the Waikaretu-Port Waikato loop at the weekend.
The gravel between Waikaretu and Port Waikato gets a bit shorter each year I think but there is still loads of gravel down there and the Nikau Caves cafe has nice cake.
Keen to do some rides with others but still new to it.
Fancy riding some gravel roads with a group this Saturday – leaving Puhoi at 10am?
If so check out the klr ramblers website:
https://klrramblers.wordpress.com/2016/09/26/klr-ramblers-ride-october/
Might see you there (if it is not raining or at least forecast to clear mid morning)!
Sounds good. Me and my trusty steed are in!
…given that the Coro ride is pushed out till the 29th.
Will try. If I get a pass I’ll see you there at 10.
Not a KLR… will be on a yellow DRZ.
Badjelly,
Does not matter what kind of bike do you have. Everyone is welcome.
Scott,
We are a sweet bunch, but we aren’t melting in the rain. Check out the September ride report. 🙂
No pass for me. Have a fun ride.
Hi,
5 of us had a great time on Saturday.
Check out the pictures and a short report on the ride.

Hi,

For anyone who is interested in a monthly, easy gravel ride nearby Auckland.
Don’t be frightened by the name of the riding group, everyone is welcome. 🙂
Sounds good, I’m in.
Sorry, not going to be able to make this one due to last minute work commitments.
I would have come if had checked this page earlier. New so here so still figuring out on where to check for what.
I went to muriwai beach on the 19th, it was alright but would have been better with some company.
If anyones planning any rides next Sunday and is looking for some company i’ll be keen to join in 🙂
We have done it again.
It was the most scenic ride we had so far.
A short report and some pics are here:

Weather permitting, I’m off on a 2 day ride starting on the 14th January. If anyone wants to join, it’ll be a slow meander.
Day 1
Auckland – Port-Waikato – Nikau Cafe – Raglan (tent camping, maybe some fishing)
Day 2
Raglan -SH22 – Ponganui Rd – Klondyke road (east to west) back to Port Waikato – Auckland
If anyone has suggestions on things to see along the way or perhaps an alternate route, feel free to drop a comment.
‘@giancarlo I’m keen to join you for the ride from Port Waikato to Raglan, plus tent the night but will ride Ponganui Rd and Klondyke road before getting to P/Waikato.
Day 2 would see us parting ways, as I’d continue riding south to Kawhai, then down Kaimango Rd, Hauturu Rd and finally have a poke around Owawenga Rd before heading home.
Hey @Black Betty, that sounds like an interesting second day. Unfortunately I’ve got something on on Sunday afternoon so I have to make the second day short and sweet.
I’ll join you for Ponganui – Klondyke – P Waikato – Raglan on day 1 though. I’ll plan day 2 closer to the time. Might ride with you for part of the ride and then head off home near one of the state highways.
Sounds like a plan GC. All going well, could meet at Glen Murray Motors on SH22 11am?
Sounds Great, see you at 11am.
I will join you adventurers on this long way down ride if the weather forecast is okay, including a night in Raglan or Kawhia. BB, I’ll also join you for the Sunday morning roads but will most likely depart around Otorohanga before you head east to Owawenga Rd. GC, did you want to meet up at Caltex Bombay at 10.20am and ride together down SH22 to Glen Murray Motors (about 30mins ride)?
I sense a little posse forming. Sounds great Scott, 10:20 at Caltex Bombay.
Do you still have mine and Black Betty’s mobile numbers? If so, could you please add us to a whatsapp group perhaps so that we can make the sleeping arrangements? I don’t know the area, but looking at the maps there’s a holiday park in Raglan, not sure if its any good though? No DOC sites it seems. Any suggestions?
I do have your mobile numbers but am not sure about this whatsapp group thingy. If there are not tent sites available in Raglan then we can ride a little further to Ruapuke where there is a good chance they will be able to accommodate us. Have a look at their website ruapukemotorcamp.co.nz which says ‘no bookings needed unless you are a large group’. If needed we could squeeze our small tents on to one site or worst case scenario freecamp down a side track – out of sight and leaving no waste of course.
All three options sound great.
Also unsure about a whatsapp group thingy…
According to the Raglan holiday park website there is no availability till 8th Feb. Seems hard to believe but that’s what it says. The Ruapuke Motor Camp looks the business.
Scott, will be good to have the company on Sunday.
ps. I don’t have anyone’s mob number. PM me
See you on Sat.
I was planning on a fang down those ways maybe this Saturday myself. I might bump into you guys, I’ll be on a Tenere 660.
‘@streethassles your welcome to ride with us. 11am at Glen Murray Motors SH22.
We are, two dog rooters and a beamer.
Cool Man!
KLR Ramblers ride for January (21 January 2017)
Hi,
https://klrramblers.wordpress.com/2017/01/15/klr-ramblers-ride-january/
For anyone who is interested in a monthly, easy gravel ride nearby Auckland.
Don’t be frightened by the name of the riding group, everyone is welcome. 🙂
A KLR ride, interesting
Thanks to GC for organising a great ride last weekend and to streethassles for joining us for a ride on his local turf. The Saturday weather was great and so were the roads riding Matakitaki, Brien, Ponganui, Klondyke and then down the coast from Port Waikato to Te Akau Wharf and then via Raglan to Ruapuke where three of us pitched our tents.
Sunday weather went from clear to drizzle to rain with a repeat cycle of the latter but this did not matter as the terrific roads, scenery and company more than made up for the lack of visibility and being soaked to the skin!
The roads on this route heading south from Ruapuke included Tuturimu, Waimarori, Te Papatapu and Kawhia with a coffee stop in Kawhia before heading east and turning right in to Kaimango.
Kaimango travels through Pirongia Forest Park and then pops you out high on a ridgeline looking across a spectacular valley of farmland eventually leading to a T junction with Hauturu Road where we headed East towards Waitomo.
This road starts out following the river and then climbs higher and higher rewarding you with a great outlook before the road enters a twisty (at least 500 corner, maybe) section through native forest where you eventually pop out on the seal of Te Anga Road. Here BB I headed for Waitomo before saying “Adios” and riding off in separate ways in search of fuel to get us home.
This was a great ride where all these country roads will deliver the remoteness, tranquility and scenery that us adventure riders enjoy!
Great meet up guys

I’m thinking of going down to do Kiwi Road and the road between Awakino and Raglan over the weekend 18 and 19 March. Anyone ridden those lately? Any issues I need to be aware of?
Thanks
KLR Ramblers Ride – March (25/03/2017)
This is going to be something different this time.
The first KLR Ramblers Rally!
This is not a race, but a friendly ride and meet-up.
All bikes are welcome as usual, not just KLRs.
Read all the details on the KLR Ramblers blog.

Hi Guys,
I’m planning to have an Auckland ride for the more unexperienced owners of big bikes, 800CC and above. We will be helping each other when the riding gets a bit harder so be prepared to push… 🙂
If you are a bit of a noob (like me) but like the challenge of riding a big bike where it was not meant to be ridden (like me) let me know.
The idea is to go for a Tutorial and practice day, we will be doing:
– Balance
– Braking
– cornering
– Hill starts and stops
– Hill descent
– probably mud
– probably Sand, soft and hard
We will start 9am on Saturday the 1st of April at this stage.
Meeting at Riverhead Z petrol station, 1090 Coatesville-Riverhead Hwy, Auckland 0820, and go from there.
If you plan to attend reply to this so I can know how many are coming. (if any) 😀
Thanks
Joao
Hi Joao, count me in.
Hi Guys, I’m sorry but I need to change the ride to the 8th of April Saturday. Same time same place, just different date.
@sushibar hope you can still make it.
Cheers
Joao
Sounds good, look forward
Hi,
Can I go with a KLR?
Happy to help with the lifting and push.
Also, maybe I can get cones if you have a place in mind for doing slow slalom riding.
