NZ Motorcycle Show 2017 – 16-17th September

For 2017 the NZ Motorcycle Show is on 16th and 17th September at ASB Showgrounds, 217 Greenlane Road West, Epsom, Auckland.

As with last year Adventure Riding NZ will have a stand there to promote Adventure Riding in New Zealand.

As with last year we’ll need 4-5 bikes to display on the stand, with my DR being one of them, and some help manning the stand over the 2 days, even if you can only do a couple of hours it all helps. Last year the stand was constantly busy talking to people interested in adventure riding.

For more information and tickets see: https://nzmotorcycleshow.co.nz/

Hi,
I think I can be there both days, together with my motorcycle if needed.
Also, if nothing dramatic happens, a 32″ screen which can play MP4 and AVI files in a loop from a USB HDD or stick.
Give me a nudge when the date is closer and the real planning starts.

Me too……ill bring my drz250 so there are proper adventure bikes there 🙂

Joao, this is probably going to be the best opportunity we will get for the meeting you suggested in the other thread??

Cheers

So best get on organising this, it slipped down the list due to lots of other stuff happening.

We had 4 bikes on the stand last year and that worked well so I’m keen for the same this time around.

My DR650 is bike number one
Joao () offered his sorted 690 and I’m very keen to have that there presuming he hasn’t sold it before then, @mark-claasen’s KTM 950 was on the stand last year and he sold it there so maybe we can sell a trick 690 this year 😉

Any thoughts on what the other bikes should be or whether it matters? along with offers of bikes from the ADVNZ management team has offered his Africa Twin which might catch a few eyes.

Andrew, (@enduro0627) we had a 40″ TV there last year playing adv videos off a laptop and we were planning to do the same this year.

Joao de Almeida Tenreiro

Great Stuff, yes I’ll old off on selling the bike before the event.
Also I have lot’s of adventure videos that you can take a look over at youtube. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKVfAWF2l-bs-I-Pe3R1o4g

I’ll see if I can make a montage that we could be looping over at the screen so if anyone has suggestions point me in the right direction.

Hi Eddie,
Do you need help with the set-up on Friday?
I can clear the second half of the day (after 1pm) and be there.
How it is going with getting a crew for the stand? I can be there both days if needed.
Also if you need a black motorcycle to achieve a good color balance, I can bring my KLR.
Any nick-necks needed? (rope, cable tie, duct-tape, nails, hammer, extension power lead, etc.)
Do you want to print something leaflets, info sheet or such?

Hi everyone,
I was thinking about starting a project for the Motorcycle Show.
Asking for pictures related to NZ adventure riding, print it and paste over a large size NZ map as background.
We could use it as decoration for the stand.
If Eddie (and the community) approves:
-Pictures can be sent to me (1 or 2 per sender to display diversity and not someone’s photo album).
-I can get the printing done.
-Get a map.
-Put it together.
-Bring it to the Motorcycle Show.

What I would need help with is to spread the word (forums, FB, whatever) to have a loads of photos to put over the map. I can also put the “call for pictures” message together if the project is a go.

Hi guys, I’m also available to help out, I’ve also got a AfricaTwin that I can have on the stand.

Give us a shout if you need.

‘@enduro0627 the pictures project sounds great!

is that a new or old AT?

I had my panniers fitted and a tent bungied across the back of the DR last year and it got a lot of attention. I was going to do the same this year.

Due to moving and having to get rid of a whole pile of stuff over the last month we no longer have a TV to use on the stand. @enduro0627 has offered a 32″ tv to use, does anyone have anything bigger?
Last year we had a laptop connected to the TV and a bunch of videos in a local folder that media player cycled through. We used the laptop and media player as the TV we had was older and wouldn’t play a lot of the video formats natively.

Any assistance setting up on the Friday evening and over the course of the weekend would be appreciated. Most likely we won’t get to the venue until 5pm on Friday night which is the same as last year and set up took 2-3 hours. The bikes have to be checked in for security which can take a little while if there is a queue.

Joao de Almeida Tenreiro

I’m happy to arrange the laptop, setup and connect to TV.
I’m not sure if I can make it on the Friday but I’ll keep you all posted.

Hi everyone,
With the approval of , I put together a “call for pictures” post.
Please help, and feel free to share the link, copy-paste the text and pictures from the post or share it on any other way in the NZ adventure motorcycle riding community to have as many as possible pictures.

Let me know if you think something need to be changed in the wording of the post.

Hi, it’s the 2017 manual

Unknown User

Just a quick update on the “Picture Project”.
I have got 16 pictures so far. Based on the size of the map and 5×7 pictures, we will need 50 to cover the map nicely. Need 17 more contributor with 2 pictures each.

Organising rides and different events would be easier if people could use they mobile phones as GPS or GPS logger. It is a fairly easy affair. Keeping 1 workshop on each days on the Motorcycle Show in this topic? Could be a crowd magnet. The screen on the stand could be used for the presentation, the stand is relatively small no additional audio or PA system needed.

Three’s no good ones on the Facebook post that we can request full res versions of? there’s been quite a response there.

The problem with FB is if you post anything there no one will read the instructions or click on the link, they will just post on FB.

Mark, yes I did save some from the Facebook page with enough good resolution.
Don’t worry about converting the pictures. Just make sure those are not smaller than the required. I need to do some clipping anyway. Digital phoros never have 4:6 or 5:7 ratio.

You can see the real thing at the AdventureRidingNZ stand on the Motorcycle Show.
Thanks again for the pictures and support.

That is seriously awesome! Thank you for doing that!

I just received the attached info today.

Attached please find a layout for the show which places your club stand in Hall 4 and in position marked 8 and is 6m wide.

Also attached is a brief club run down, an A_Z info sheet and entry sheet for your bikes. Obviously we would appreciate you completing these as soon as possible but feel free to send me them before the lists are complete so we can make a start at entering them.

Just got this from the show organisers

Some clubs have enquired about having power and lighting supplied to their sites.

Unfortunately we have to pay for this but we can arrange it for you and pass on our direct cost.

The cost of having power is $50.00 +GST and the cost of lighting is $88.00 +GST per light however we are happy to subsidise the lighting by 50% which means a cost of $44.00 +GST per light (800W Halogens). A few of these will really make your stand look good.

Please let me know if you would like us to arrange either of these.

We need power, I’m not sure about lighting. Last year we were in a relatively dark area, this year we are must more in a main hall location.

do you still want to put your KTM on the stand?
, want to put the GS on or should we get ‘s AT, or just squeeze 5 bikes on?

If so can you both please fill out these spreadsheet details asap and get them back to me so I can send all the bike details into the organisers.

Help setting up Friday night and packing down Sunday evening would be greatly appreciated. It’s not a lot of work but by the end of the weekend I’m going to be totalled as I’ll have been on my feet on the stand the entire weekend.

I have a stack of business cards to give away and we will have a 40″ tv and a laptop there to play movies.

I’m struggling to get more people to man the stand though. If they operate like last year there will be a free entry pass for the owner of each bike on the stand.

Cheers

Here’s a schedule for manning the stand. It is preferable to have at least 4 people on the stand if possible at least until lunchtime Sunday but especially on Saturday given how busy it was last year.

So far there are lots of gaps in it.

‘@enduro0627, if you want to enter your bike into one of the competition categories you can do it here. I’ve entered the DR for best off road, I think has put his GS in for it too.

Sunday assistance would be greatly appreciated. When could you do?

We have enough bikes thanks. Well done on the AT, 1992 would be a RD04?

Andrew and Jaoa haven’t confirmed any particular times they could assist that I have seen.

I will deliver the map to the show on Friday around 5pm.
The bike will follow shortly and I can stay to help with the setup.
Also, I can attend the stand on all day Saturday, and all day Sunday.
I will help with taking down the stand as well.

How about I do Sunday morning? Happy to do first thing if you want a lie in!
Sounds like you have enough people to help dismantle Eddie, but could swap that to Sunday avo if you prefer….many hands make light work.

I’m meeting with Joao and Andrew Thursday evening so we can discuss then also.

If we are on the stand do we need to pay to get in?

Cheers

All sounds good

Just to quantify some things, Set up 5-7pm Friday, What time are we all planning to be there ?

Free Passes for Bikes on display and set up team ?

Costs for power and lighting ? we could put entry money from free passes in kitty to pay for that ?

Eddieb Brodie
Admin
2026 years ago

I’ll be there from 5 on Friday night.

Last year we got a free pass for each bike on the stand, plus a couple of extra’s. I’m hoping they will do the same this year but I don’t know at this stage.

I am covering the power cost, I didn’t go for lighting as we are pretty central in the main hall so hopefully won’t need it.

Richard Frankland
2026 years ago

Ok, so I will be there Sunday morning 9 to 12. I’m happy to pay the $20 as I will have a look around anyway afterwards. Downloading the schedule editing and uploading again is a bit beyond my iPad ability threshold…

Will see you there Eddie.

So wish I had been able to come up and meet some of you guys in person. Unfortunately I am unable to travel much at the moment. But hope to meet you guys over summer once my injury heals… I am hoping the show went well and we have gained some new members. Thanks to all you hard working guys who contributed to the stand.

And the show has ended, it was a great event.
To me personally I enjoyed spending the time talking about Motorbikes, what we had done with them or what we have done to them.
Meet some of the members in person and maybe recruit some new ones.

Here is a quick video from the stand that I managed to sneak in with the Drone.

Thanks to everyone who came along to say hi to us over the weekend, and especially to the management team for helping organise, set up, run, and pack down the stand.

I took a few pics with my phone, unfortunately most of the ones with people in them came out blurry.

There were some nice bikes outside

The stand

@jonibarteam’s KTM 690 attracted a lot of attention

Ducati had an entire stand devoted to their Scrambler

The Suzuki V-Strom 250 was on display. I had a sit on it and the ergonomics felt pretty good.

Benelli had a stand with the TRK 502 on the stand among other things, including 2 mountain bikes. I sat on this also and found it very tall.

Eddieb Brodie
Admin
2026 years ago

Motomail had a BMW 1200GS setup with some serious looking Kreiga luggage

Carbon Garage had a very tidy R80G/S on their stand, for sale for around $10k I think.

The Enfield Himalayan had a very comfy gel seat and also good ergonomics for me. I’m quite keen to test ride one of these. The smaller Himalayan motor apparently goes quite a lot better than the 500 in the road models, and at 410cc it’s cheaper rego than a DR650 or KLR650.

Not an adventure bike but I’d love a Kawasaki GT550 as I used to have one as a London Courier bike. This is the 750 which is mostly the same but the 750 is about 10-15cm longer at the tank, and doesn’t really go any faster.

Round the World rider Chantal Simons was working on the Honda stand and came by to have a chat, she’s a very inspiring lady and is keen to inspire other women.

Chantal rode around Australia and wrote a book about her travels which you can buy as an e-book on Amazon Kindle or Kobo.

Chantal also rode a Yamaha XT250 from Australia to Holland and you can read about that on her blog, Chick On The Chook Chaser.
