We had a little issue with registration and community points but that has now been resolved.

Thanks for the feedback @Sharn Amonn. I think I’ve fixed the sticky nav, give it a try and let me know.

I can’t see any draft posts or anything from you.

I’m also planning on fixing usernames with Google or Facebook in the front of them, that’s a hangover from an old registration plugin. I couldn’t do it on the old host but think I can do it here.

You can Subscribe to or Favorite any topic via link at the top of each topic. you can then access your Subscribed or Favorited topics from your profile. Then you don’t have to go hunting for it.

Do you think you could please bump the waikato ride thread so i can follow or favorite it. Cheers.

not sure if this is the correct place to post this?

when i click the links at the top of the page the majority come back with a nothing found result, these have worked for me in the past.

the forum button works and if i navigate to an individual ride under tracks and gps that works but clicking the north or south island options gives me nothing found.
any suggestions?

Now that’s weird, they were working fine a week or so ago. I get the same result. I will check that out thanks.

Right, got that fixed.

Setting up some test stuff now to see if I can figure out whats going on with the Profile Pic upload, I think there’s a conflict between the pic upload and other functions on the site.

When quoting someone, the answer is written half way down the pages?
and the answer to the quote is even further down?
Plus the tags are included (cite) etc rather than just the quote…

Yeah I haven’t figured out the Quote gap yet. The cite thing puts in the quoted users name in the quote, and triggers a notification to the quoted user that they have been quoted, so that part is how it’s supposed to be.

The host has allocated more memory to the website so hopefully it won’t happen anymore.

Profile picture uploads are now working again!

This site is the worst I have tried to use. Even on a fibre connection here (Christchurch) the response time is appalling – usually several tens of seconds. The user-interface is not very good either, but this is made worse by the slow response times.

Thanks for the feedback George.

Over the past fortnight we’ve been hammered by automated bots trying to hack into the site and it’s got a lot worse this week, to the extent that they have temporarily taken the site down a couple of times due to causing the site to use up all of it’s available memory and CPU, effectively performing a denial of service attack. This has significantly affected response times.
I put some stuff in place this morning that will hopefully help reduce this load, but only time will tell. I’m exploring more options as well.

I’m open to constructive feedback on the user-interface if you specific ideas on how it could be better.

Here’s our CPU and Ram usage over the past 7 days

Aaron Martin
2026 years ago

Many of the links from the menu are not working tonight, some examples:

https://www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/gps-tracks-rides/north-island-tracks/

https://www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/rider-tracking/

They are just coming up with an error message “Apologies, but no results were found for your request. Perhaps searching will help you to find a related content.”

It’s taken a little while to find the issue but this is now fixed.

I did some more tuning of the site today and it feels to me like it’s running a bit better. The spam bots are still hammering the site though.

The changes we’ve put in place have made improvements and significantly reduced the out of memory errors but the bloody spammers and bots are still at it.

Eddieb Brodie
Admin
2026 years ago

We’re being hammered by Spam bots trying to hack the site again.
I can see what files they are trying to access and they are trying to circumvent the sites security to access core files directly. Fortunately I have that all locked down but it still places a huge load on the servers CPU and memory dealing with all of those requests, at times using it all up.

October 22-26 shows the normal traffic levels and you can see October 19th and yesterdays traffic was up about 600% which has skewed the graph a fair bit.

The usual levels shown for October 22-26 are 500-600 visitors and about 2500 hits per day.

http://www.AdventureRidingNZ.co.nz is currently hosted on shared webhosting, which is cheap but performance can be subject to the loads other web sites on the shared server are putting on the server resources.

It’s looking like I’ll have to shift to a dedicated hosting platform somewhere but it will take some research to choose a good one that fits within the budget of ‘bugger all’, and then a fair bit of work to transfer the site over to the new hosting. Membership of the site has grown by about 20% in the last 6 weeks which is fantastic but that rapid increase has bought it’s challenges.

Given that I also have a day job as you guys aren’t buying enough tyres to allow me to quit and concentrate on Adventure Riding NZ alone it will take some time to achieve this, a few months rather than a few weeks.

In the meantime please be patient with the site, it requires a fair bit of work to keep the site running, up to date with the latest software, add new content, keep the spammers at bay, etc with and it’s just me doing all of it on top of my day job, and sometime in there I need to go for rides too.

Cheers

Eddie

I’ve shifted the Forums higher up the menu system to make them easier to access from mobile devices.

Eddieb Brodie

I’ve done a bit more work on the website performance and according to GTMETRIX.com and my butt dyno the site seems to be running a fair bit faster.
According to GTMETRIX some pages up to 60% faster than what they were, particuarly the homepage and forums.

It’s still not rocketship fast but there’s quite a lot of complexity going on in the background. I’ll keep working on it however and I have a few more things to try yet.

Eddieb Brodie

More updates, I’ve upgraded the sites’s PHP version to PHP 7 this afternoon. PHP7 was only released recently and claims to give significant performance improvements.

My butt dyno says it’s running a fair bit faster but what is your experience?

Eddieb Brodie

We did a major software version update today, if you see anything odd shout out.

And a picture of me on my first bike, just for shits and giggles and to test image uploading is still working ok.

Thanks To at http://www.wordhost.co.nz we are rocking on new webhosting and the site is running better than it ever has. Page loading times have halved and the site should be stable and be able to handle the increased traffic we’ve been getting.

There’s still a few little things to tidy up like some of the tracks aren’t showing up the menu’s but otherwise it’s all go.

I installed a major software update this morning. You shouldn’t see anything different but if you notice any odd behavior let me know.

Site availability has been very bad over Labour weekend, we had major problem with our site host where the server was pretty much offline over most of the weekend and the hosts service & support has been appalling.

Everything seems to be back up now so we’ll see how things go.

Individual tracks not displaying on new track pages has been fixed. New pages look right again.

Eddieb Brodie

Our webhost performance has been very erratic again today with the site being unavailable several times already this morning. I’ve discovered the current webhost, Site5.com, was bought out last month by a huge hosting conglomerate that has a history of gutting companies it purchases, and that all previous employees have been laid off.

I’m currently investigating new hosting options, at this stage InMotion Hosting is leading the list.

So another 4 hour outage today due to issues at the webhost.

We will definately be migrating to a new webhost very shortly, but I’m out of town most of tomorrow and all weekend so it won’t be before then.

Eddieb Brodie

After the huge outages of the last few days the website has now been moved to a new host and hopefully will be stable again.

If you see any odd behavior please let me know.

I’ve found a couple of issues. There’s a few pages that aren’t displaying properly and the main menu isn’t working on mobile devices.

I’m out of town this weekend so won’t be able to look at these till Monday.

Edit: Daughter bought her laptop away so I was able to fix the pages not displaying, not sure why the menu isn’t working on mobile devices yet.

invisibleNot sure if it’s in the coding or whether an issue with browser displaying the correct colours, but it sure makes it interesting to insert images etc. Running Firefox Quantum 60.0.2 64bit.
