Hàdge Haine, the water proofing would be easy enough to achieve. Put your foot in a plastic bag, something like the bag a loaf of bread comes in, and secure above the ankle with an elastic band or two. This simple solution still allows for gear shaft protection and double use of back strap.
In some places they are seen as an upgrade 😉
