Jake and I are leaving Caltex Dinsdale tonight at 6:30 PM for a short wander taking in Old Mountain Road and Waitetuna Valley Road, and probably a look up Vandy Road.
@facebook-michael-eastwood1, @Dean Saunders, @Oscar ?
Give me a call as you’re leaving Dinsdale and I’ll meet you at Whatawhata.
07 829 8262
Just be there at 6:30
Nice cruisy ride thanks @Jake Maryniak and @facebook-michael-eastwood1.
The sun sets on Waitetuna Road with the Raglan windmills in the background.
Anything happening this Sunday?
It looks like Sunday is going to be rain.
We’ve got to go and look at a bike tomorrow morning and after that will probably cruise out to Raglan for brunch/lunch. I might take the sidecar for a spin.
Bugger. How can I link this blog to my cell phone so I can have text alerts?
If you subscribe to the topic at the top of the first post it should send you alerts.
Plans change sometimes and I ended up heading out on my own on the sidecar. First stop was Raglan where I met @Phoenix Inflight and presumably his better half, great to meet you guys today!
I grabbed a sandwich there and headed for Old Mountain Road, just getting to Raglan was the furthest I had ridden the sidecar to date but it was running well and I was keen to have a go on a bit of gravel.
Lunch was at the summit of old Mountain and the bike went up there fairly well, it’s fun being able to do big slides into and out of right hand corners, it’s a little unnerving on uneven terrain though when the sidecar is higher than the bike and feels like it wants to tip over.
Hows the chair handling now. You mentioned a while ago that it was a struggle to turn during the early iteration?
It’s better but still not right. I went from not enough toe in to too much, and a bit much lean out.
anyone going for a ride any time this week?
I’ve just done a 2 day ride and am away with the family for New Years. @Jake Maryniak amd I may do some day rides early in the new year.
I’m taking the scooter down to Awakino tomorrow (Fri 2nd) via the Mangatoa road. My plan is to scoot thru Waitomo, over Waipuna, Ngapaenga , Pomarangai. I hope to turn off at Waikawau and see what’s up Te Marama rd, then continue down to Awakino. From there, I will probably then head crosscountry through Aria to SH4.
An alternative return might be back up Mangatoa and Marokopa/Harbour road.
haven’t ridden Mangatoa road sth of the Pomarangai turn off so should be interesting. Plenty of opportunities to try out the new camera. Then after lunch will mow the lawns!! or maybe not.
Jake and I got some gravel in today, we only confirmed we were going out at 10 this morning.
A small group of us met at Caltex Dinsdale, me on the DR650, @Jake Maryniak on his new DR650, Jennifer on her DR250, Aaron our son on his GN250, he’s a learner and has only been on the road a week so didn’t do the main ride with us, just came across town, plus Nigel on his CX500.
Aaron went his own way and the rest of us cruised out to Raglan for lunch. Black Sands Cafe by the only bike parking in Raglan was the lunch venue, however Jennifers Seafood Chowder was so bad she had to take it back and got a refund.
We split at Raglan and Jennifer and Nigel went home while Jake and I headed out to Ruapuke Beach and then did Old Mountain Road on the way back to Hamilton.
Anyone interested in going to have a look at this tomorrow if the weather holds out?
Considering going out for a ride tomorrow with @Jake Maryniak, we could go to Kawhai via the Bridal Veil Falls road for a gentle back road explore, or to Auckland for the Ulysses Toy Run, or somewhere else entirely.
Get over this way sometime! You guys seem to ride the same old places…
I don’t mind riding on my own but you gotta get out and explore a tad more towards the East fellas!
I’ve been mapping roads over to the West and think I have all the good stuff now, is there much over your way?
Pureora Forest needs more investigation I think.
Well Jake wimped out yesterday and no one else spoke up so I went out on my own to Kawhia.
On the way out I checked out and tracked Kawhia Road past Bridal Veil Falls which is marked as a dead end but isn’t, there’s now a page up for Kawhia Road to check out if you want to go and ride it.
There were a bunch of other adventure riders in Kawhia, a group from Auckland mostly on BMW 1200 GS’s with a KLR650 and KTM thrown in, plus a couple from Te Awamutu on a R1200GS and F700GS and 2 guy riding a 1200 Tenere and a BMW S1000.
5 minutes after leaving Kawhia I hit a bee which stung me on the neck in revenge and the whole trip home my jacket collar rubbed on that which was uncomfortable, but didn’t interupt the enjoyment of the ride.
I guess if you are looking for metal stay West….
BUT, we have some of the best roads here, metal and tar but less travelled….
Agreed, there are some nice quiet swoopy country roads out East.
We need to do a Coromandel explore day, I’ve found some more roads to explore up there.
I’m going up to Coromandel to explore some roads on Saturday 28th Feb if anyone is interested.
My primary objective is to record some new tracks for the website and as such this will not be a fluid ride. It will be a slow ride with lots of stopping to take pics, look at maps etc and quite possibly a lot of back tracking due to dead end roads.
Hmmm, the weather’s looking a bit crap, If it’s crap on the day I’ll reschedule for another day.
Looks familiar, did you guys see a DR650 coming the other way just after you started along Old Mountain Road?
Yep we saw you, I was going to stop but you kept on going.
I must have been having too much fun to stop!
That Old Mountain Road is a pretty nice bit of gravel riding, that’s for sure!
The weather is looking good so I’m getting all set up for this tomorrow.
Anyone interested in a ride to Raglan for brunch?
Well no one yelled out so Jennifer and I and Nigel had a cruisy ride out to Raglan for lunch.
While out there we ran into our mate Garfield on his very nice CX500 Turbo
When we got back Jennifer took the V-Strom around the block for the first time and came back exclaiming ‘Why are you selling my bike!’. The V-strom is the first physically large big bike she has ridden and it fits her like a glove. She can even flat foot it where I can’t quite.
so is it coming off trade me?
is anyone going for a ride in the waikato region this weekend?i would be interested in meeting up for a ride sometime this queens b-day weekend
I’ll be disassembling mine this weekend hopefully.
Bump for @facebook-hadge-haine1
Thank you Edwar. Followed now. Cheers:-)
‘@facebook-keithfenwick11 mentioned he was going to Nikau Caves this morning so I thought I’d shoot up there and meet him seeing as we hadn’t met before.
After breaking the DR out of the local garage with a new WOF I shot up there and met Keith. After a fantastic Eggs Benny and a great chat we headed south down the coast then to Ngaruawahia were we went out separate ways.
Great to meet up with Eddie. They make a great coffee at the Nikau Café as well. I took the long way home….https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-UUzzFzCSDUWlREbzY2dDIzLWs/view?usp=sharing
Sharn, Craig, and I met up at BP Rototuna at 8 this morning and headed to Nikau Caves Cafe where Keith Fenwick was waiting for us.
After a great brunch we covered the Te Akau Coast Inland Route and Klondyke Road before heading to the dunes at Port Waikato.
A KTM being repaired.

Great views on the Te Akau Coast Inland Route.

Looking out to sea from Klondyke Road.

In the dunes at Port Waikato

Soft sand and my DR don’t mix

The supermodel and the super tanker

Keith’s 690 and Craig’s WR450

There’s a TKC80 under there.

I am not sure what bent the plate, the only thing I can think of is maybe a rock or branch flicked up and hit it, or I cut a corner a bit sharper than I thought I did.
Nice Eddie.
That trench you dug… you’re in the wrong business…
Oh that bloody sand dune… next time, you’ll see you’ll all see…
That must have been you that we passed as we were leaving Klondyke Road today. Great day for a ride 🙂
That was us, got any pics of your day out?
Who’s riding where in the Waikato today?
I randomly wandered out and ended up in Te Awamutu where I stopped for a quick break. A local district council worker pulled up so I asked him where to go and he pointed me to Aotearoa Road near Ngaroma so that way I headed.
Aotearoa Road was good so I’ll have a track up for that in a week or so.
Kiwihenge

Keen for a place in Ngaroma?

An old truck languishing on Aotearoa Road

A page and GPX track for Aotearoa Road is now loaded.
Sunday night the son jumped on the back and we did an evening run through Old Mountain Road and Waitetuna Valley.
There’s a lot of new graffiti on Old Mountain Road.
Waikato weather tomorrow is shite, Wednesday looks ok and is my last day off before returning to the slave pits. Who’s up for a ride?
I am heading out in the morning as it is a holiday here in the Waikato. Anyone want to join me just let me know…
I shall be leaving Te Aroha at 0900 and heading south west, Tirau, Cecil Road, Galaxy Rd and towards Rotorua lakes…
it will be a fast ride, no stops and no cameras, no food or drinks…(Just kidding)
I will be taking photos, using the Garmin and collecting data. Pit stops along the way, but no lattes…:)
Packing sandwiches so stops will be somewhere with views…
Cheers!
You can’t get into leslie/Cecil road from the whites road end anymore. It’s been blocked off as at that point it’s on private land and not where the paper road is actually defined.
I will take a look anyway and do some other roads around that happen to be some of my favourites…
Not all of them are metal but will tag them never the less and send them to you as .gpx Hopefully grab a few photos as well. This will be an opportunity for a breakdown ride of the DR650. I will be using the DR800s most of the time and certainly be bringing that down to the Central Plateau all things going well.
